Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

April 15, 2024

Fellow Democrats:

On August 19th, Democrats from all over the country, including U.S. territories, will converge on Chicago to begin the 4-day process of officially nominating Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to be our candidates for President and Vice President in November. The Democratic National Convention is a sometimes-contentious spectacle that many of us have watched on television from afar. Some Democrats have dreamed of being a delegate themselves to one of these every-four-years events, personally involved in the process. But how do you get to be a delegate?

Becoming a delegate to the National Convention is a long process that will begin this year in New Mexico in June, and yes . . . even YOU could become a delegate and participate in the process in Chicago. On June 8th our local party will meet in Estancia in the morning to begin the process, starting with elections at the ward level to elect our delegates to our County Post-Primary Convention that same afternoon. That part is easy. Just about everyone who attends will be elected to either be a delegate or alternate to the County Convention.

At the County Convention we will elect delegates to represent our county to both a Congressional District Convention (CD1) on June 15th and a State Convention on June 22nd. Each of those two conventions will, in turn, elect a small number of delegates to the National Convention in Chicago in August. The competition for credentialing as a National Convention delegate is often fierce, but if you’ve ever dreamed of being in the room when all of those balloons are released and the confetti flies when the party’s nominee accepts his nomination, now’s your chance.

Watch the Blue Beacon in the coming weeks for more details, and be sure to mark your calendar to be available those three successive Saturdays in June, as well as from August 19th to the 22nd!
