Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

June 17, 2024

Good Morning Democrats,

This past weekend the 2024 election cycle entered a new phase, with the completion of the DPNM Congressional District Post-Primary Convention to select national delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The results of the voting haven’t yet been announced, but Torrance County’s own Augustine Montoya has a very good chance of making the list of those who will be going to Chicago in August to officially nominate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to head up the Democratic Party’s ticket in the General Election. Meanwhile, things are moving along at the local level.

On Friday, our office in Moriarty (Route 66 Shopping Center, a few doors east of Moriarty Foods) received 100 yard signs to promote the candidacy of Fred Ponzlov for the NM House District 22 race, and we expect to receive 100 Biden/Harris yard signs either this week or early next week. We already have a good supply of Melanie Stansbury for Congress signs and are working to get signs for Martin Heinrich for Senate and Bill Scott for NM Senate District 19.

With the exception of the Biden/Harris signs, these displays of support for our candidates are free. Unfortunately, we’re required to buy the Biden/Harris signs, and need to request a donation to help defray the cost. The national campaign treats yard signs as a fundraiser, charging $20/sign. We did manage to find a less expensive source but are asking for a minimum donation of $5/sign.

Some families are reluctant to show their support of our Democratic candidates out of fear of intimidation by some of their more radical neighbors. We can easily understand this, since some of Trump’s supporters do their very best to be intimidating, with intimidation and bullying clearly being part of the Republican strategy. But displaying a yard sign or two on your property sends a message to those would-be bullies that we will NOT be intimidated and sends a message to Democrats in your neighborhood that they are NOT alone.

The office will be open tomorrow (June 18th), next Tuesday and every Tuesday and Saturday thereafter from noon to 4 PM, with hopes of expanding the hours as the election draws closer.

It's time to . . .

LGBTQ Pride Month traces its roots back to the 1969 Stonewall riots, which started on June 28, 1969. The first Pride marches started the following year, on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the multiday riots, and these one-day celebrations eventually evolved into a full month of LGBTQ pride.

At the last DPTC Meeting we heard from NM Senator Liz Stefanics about the upcoming special session and in particular about one of the proposed bills. Here is the link to the "Assisted Outpatient Treatment Act."
