HEAVENWARD

How Eternity Can Change Your Life on Earth

Cameron Cole

Though they’re destined for eternal glory, many Christians languish in earthly mindedness. Having never set their sights on things above, they lack hope in adversity and vibrancy in their faith. Where can believers find joy and inspiration for everyday life? It’s in the already-and-not-yet reality of heaven.

Following the unexpected loss of his firstborn child, pastor Cameron Cole’s daily focus shifted drastically heavenward. He discovered that an intentional eternal mindset can bring meaning and joy to every Christian’s life. In this heartfelt, theologically rich book, Cole draws from his personal story of grief, the apostle Paul’s letters, and the examples of believers throughout history to demonstrate how heavenly mindedness fosters contentment, hope in suffering, motivation for missions and evangelism, commitment to morality and ethics, and no fear in death.

“‘The end defines the story.’ These profound words capture the essence of Cameron Cole’s life-giving wisdom and insight in Heavenward. It will help shed the earthly minded scales from your eyes and lift your gaze to see not only the promises of your future heavenly home but also the beautiful reality that heaven has already come to us through our union with Jesus. May it encourage your heart with the truth that the hope of tomorrow directly infuses hope into the realities of today.” -Sarah Walton, coauthor, He Gives More Grace; Hope When It Hurts; and Together Through the Storms

HELP HEAVENWARD

Guidance and Strength for the Christian's Life Journey

Octavius Winslow

Admission to heaven is promised and guaranteed to all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ but they all need help to get there.

Sin, suffering, death and Satan obstruct the believer’s progress in faith and obedience. But God’s grace, his Son’s merit and the Spirit’s might, all cooperate to direct, uphold, encourage and restore the believer who persevered on the holy pilgrimage.

Help Heavenward, a practical handbook on sanctification with heaven ever in view, is devotional writing at its finest. I know of no better book to give to Christians as they struggle in this sinful world to live in obedience to their Saviour. Use this book to become acquainted with those sacred truths of Scripture that the Spirit uses to mold our thoughts, words, and actions for Christlike living.

Author’s Preface

1. The Ransomed Returning Home

2. Progressive Meet-ness for Heaven

3. The Burdened Gently Led by Christ

4. The Clouds of the Christian, the Chariot of God

5. Trial, a Help Heavenward

6. Bonds Loosed

7. Human Care Transferred to God

8. Self-Communion

9. Backsliders Returning

10. The Swelling of Jordan

11. Our Father’s House

Help Heavenward–that is the strength of the Christian life journey. Chapter two of this book is on progressive sanctification–about the only thing I’ve ever read on it that is well-balanced and makes sense. . . . That alone is worth the price of this book. Winslow is very warmly experiential in all that he writes, and you’ll just find, whatever he does . . . meets the needs of the soul.’ —JOEL R. BEEKE

STEPPING HEAVENWARD

by Elizabeth Prentiss

Foreword by Elisabeth Elliot

This book has touched the hearts of multitudes of women all over the world from the moment it appeared in 1869. Over 200,000 copies sold in the 1800's, and since the 1992 edition by Calvary Press over 100,000 more copies have sold.

It was one of the favorite books of Elisabeth Elliot, who said, "This book is a treasure of both godly and womanly wisdom told with disarming candor and humility, yet revealing a deep heart's desire to know God."

Martha Peace, Susan Hunt, Sharon James, Kay Arthur and Joni Eareckson Tada recommend it very highly. Men will also profit greatly from this book.

"This book is a treasure of both godly and womanly wisdom told with disarming candor and humility, yet revealing a deep heart's desire to know God. We desperately need such intimate accounts when the word commitment is so little understood and so seldom practiced. I recommend it to any woman who wants to walk with God, and to men also, who need to better understand the wives they live with."—Elisabeth Elliot

"This book will serve as a guide for the Christian woman who desires to leave behind the dull, dry indifference of spiritual mediocrity to discover the rich, deep joy of knowing Jesus more fully." —Joni Eareckson Tada

"I highly recommend it!" —Kay Arthur

We have received numerous letters through the years from women whose lives have been transformed by reading this wonderful book. Here is just a sample -

"This book is an incredible journal of a woman from age 16 until death. She candidly discusses her weaknesses and struggles. Continually I said to myself, 'She's just like me!' She gives amazing insight into how God uses the everyday difficulties to expose our pride and selfishness. I was encouraged and inspired. I could read it again immediately. I wanted to underline half the book." - young lady from Germany

HEAVEN IS A WORLD OF LOVE

Jonathan Edwards

In this classic exposition of 1 Corinthians 13:8–10, Jonathan Edwards exhorts Christians to ponder the love of God—both here in the world and in expectation of heaven. The things of this world are temporary, but “love never ends” (1 Cor. 13:8). God’s love is a foretaste of future glory, made available through communion with the Holy Spirit. Each page is rich with pastoral insights that will leave readers hungry to experience more of God’s love in eager anticipation of heaven.

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was a pastor, theologian, and missionary. He is generally considered the greatest American theologian. A prolific writer, Edwards is known for his many sermons, including "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," and his classic A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections. Edwards was appointed president of the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) shortly before his death.

SPURGEON'S SORROWS

Realistic Hope for those who Suffer from Depression

Zack Eswine

THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF A BOOK THAT HAS TOUCHED MANY THOUSANDS WITH THE HOPE OF THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL THAT REACHES THE BROKEN AND WOUNDED SHEEP OF CHRIST!

This precious book offers the following:

*A reflection on Spurgeon's struggles with the darkness of despair

*Help to understand & support those suffering with depression

*How Jesus can bring light to the darkness of the soul

Christians should have the answers, shouldn't they? Depression affects many people both personally and through the ones we love. Here Zack Eswine draws from C.H Spurgeon, 'the Prince of Preachers' experience to encourage us. What Spurgeon found in his darkness can serve as a light in our own darkness. Zack Eswine brings you here, not a self-help guide, rather 'a handwritten note of one who wishes you well.'

"I am the subject of depressions of spirit so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of wretchedness as I go to." (CHS)

"We very speedily care for bodily diseases; they are too painful to let us slumber in silence: and they soon urge us to seek a physician or a surgeon for our healing. Oh, if we were as much alive to the more serious wounds of our inner man." (CHS)

"Personally I know that there is nothing on earth that the human frame can suffer to be compared with despondency and prostration of mind." (CHS)

ENDORSEMENTS

"There are few men I trust more to write a book on depression than Zack Eswine. His tears have freed me to embrace my tears, and his story of heartache has taken me further into my own. So Zack hasn't merely written a book chronicling Spurgeon's often debilitating struggles with melancholy and depression; he has given us a grace-full en ramp to understand OUR sorrows, and an incredibly practical guide for caring for heart-pained friends God places in our lives. I cannot wait to buy many copies of this book to give to strugglers and caregivers alike." - Scotty Ward Smith, Founding Pastor, Christ Community Church, Franklin TN

"You can almost taste Spurgeon's tears in this book. Depression is a barely understood, silent assassin in the church. If you, like me, have succumbed to this debilitating disease, then Zack Eswine's gentle, poetic, unmasking of Spurgeon's inner turmoil may become a soothing balm to your soul. It may not heal you, but a healthy empathy emerges when you read about the struggles of a man who has walked down the same dark alleys you stumble along, and somehow found God in the valley of despair. If you don't struggle with depression yourself, it will help you love those who do!" -Jeremy McQuoid, Teaching Pastor, Deeside Christian Fellowship, Aberdeen, Scotland

"Most Christian books on depression depress me. This book is a very rare and precious gift of encouragement and help. In it two godly pastor-scholars open up their lives to us and share their hearts. Both have suffered profoundly and both have known seasons of deep despair and darkness. Together they bring us God's word, helping us wrestle with the scary fact that our Heavenly Father loves us dearly and sometimes calls us to lifelong struggles with dark despair. I wish I could give this book to everyone I have ever counselled or ever will counsel. It gives us a life-changing, gospel-saturated perspective on this very prevalent, painful, and confusing problem." -Barbara Duguid, Author, Extravagant Grace

"The river of life often flows through sloughs of despond. Charles Spurgeon knew that well. He knew depression. He knew the God from whom life flows. Ditto Zack Eswine in this unusual, refreshing, sensible book. Too often in our day, depression gets reinterpreted as a 'thing,' is objectified into a merely medical diagnosis, is alienated from our humanness. This book shows us a good way forward... Read it, and take it to heart." - David Powlison, late CCEF Executive Director, Senior Editor, Journal of Biblical Counseling

WHEN THE DARKNESS WILL NOT LIFT

Doing What We Can While We Wait for God and Joy

John Piper

Even the most faithful, focused Christians can encounter periods of depression and spiritual darkness when joy seems to stay just out of reach. It can happen because of sin, satanic assault, distressing circumstances, or hereditary and other physical causes. In When the Darkness Will Not Lift, John Piper aims to give some comfort and guidance to those experiencing spiritual darkness.

Readers will gain insight into the physical side of depression and spiritual darkness, what it means to wait on the Lord in a time of darkness, how unconfessed sin can clog our joy, and how to minister to others who are living without light. Piper uses real-life examples and sensitive narrative to show readers abundant reason to hope that God will pull them out of the pit of despair and into the light once again.

THE LORD OF PSALM 23

Jesus our Shepherd, Companion, and Host

by David Gibson

Foreword by Sinclair Ferguson

50% OFF ALL WEEK

Psalm 23 is one of the most recognizable passages in the whole Bible. Though relatively short, this poetic depiction of God’s love epitomizes Christ’s goodness and provision as he leads his children. Even lifelong Christians will find fresh encouragement by closely studying these familiar words.

David Gibson walks through each verse in Psalm 23, thoroughly examining its 3 depictions of the believer’s union with Christ as sheep and shepherd, traveler and companion, and guest and host. Gibson provides canonical context for the Psalm’s beautiful imagery, inspiring praise and wonder as readers reflect on the loving Shepherd who meets every need.

"Occasionally in the chapel services at the seminary where I taught, one of the students would introduce the guest preacher with the four magical words “He is my minister.” There are few descriptions under-shepherds of Christ’s flock value more than these simple words expressing the special bond of affection that exists between pastor and people. I have never had the opportunity to use these words—that is, until now. For David Gibson is not only my friend; he is my minister. By the time you have finished reading these pages, you will realize why I count it a great privilege to sit under his ministry." -Sinclair Ferguson, taken from the Foreword

THE PROMISES OF GOD

A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on the ESV

Charles H. Spurgeon

50% OFF ALL WEEK

For over 150 years, Charles Spurgeon’s classic daily devotional on God’s promises has comforted the hearts of God’s people. For each day of the year, Spurgeon reflects on a specific promise of God from Scripture that strengthened his heart in times of severe depression and suffering. Each daily meditation testifies to the goodness, faithfulness, and power of God.

In this volume, Tim Chester helps Spurgeon speak to a new generation, updating archaic words, shortening sentences, and streamlining sentence structure—all without losing Spurgeon’s passionate and pastoral voice. These devotional readings will inspire you with fresh faith in the promise-making and promise-keeping God of the Bible.

"The Promises of God" is a 365 day devotional by Charles Spurgeon that was originally titled "The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith." Tim Chester has updated archaic words and used more modern sentence structure to make reading easier while still maintaining the feel of the original. He also used a modern version of the Bible (English Standard Version) rather than the original KJV except when the KJV wording is directly referenced in the devotion. This does make the devotions easier to read and understand.
