FEAST DAY OF SAINTS

MARY, MARTHA,

AND

LAZARUS

JULY 29

“Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus”

(John 11:5).

This is how John’s Gospel describes Jesus’ relationship with these siblings

whom we honor together.

Of course, Jesus loves all people equally with the perfection of divine charity.

So why does John’s Gospel single these three out this way?

In the Gospel passage, the word “love” doesn't just mean

the perfect charity Christ has in His Heart for all people.

It also implies that Jesus had a special relationship with these three,

perhaps throughout His life,

but at least during the time of His public ministry.

This is a helpful fact to ponder since

it gives us a glimpse into the authentic humanity of Jesus.

He formed friendships and

enjoyed spending time with those friends.

As both God and man, He ate with them, laughed with them,

listened to them, and loved them.

Now, from Heaven, Jesus wants to extend

that human and divine love He perfectly offers to everyone.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SPIRITUALITY

HOW DOES GOD CHANGE US?

Many Christians take it for granted that

God changes us

to bring us closer to Him.

But many don’t actually know what it MEANS to be changed

— the technical term is “justified” —

by God.

In an awesome conversation with Chris Stefanick,

Dr. Prothro makes complicated theology

simple for the rest of us.

SPECIAL PRAYERS

On January 26, 2021, Pope Francis

ordered the inscription of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus

into the General Roman Calendar

to replace the existing celebration of Saint Martha alone.

Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus are now celebrated

each year as an Obligatory Memorial on July 29.

PrayerTo Sts. MARTHA, MARY and LAZARUS

Grant, we pray, almighty God,

that the example of your Saints

may spur us on to a better life,

so that we, who celebrate the

memory of Saints Martha,

Mary and Lazarus,

may also imitate without ceasing their deeds.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

American Eucharistic Witnesses:

Sacrifice and the Testimony of Francis Cardinal George

Struck with polio as a young teenager, it seemed the hopes for Francis George to be ordained a priest were dashed. George never allowed suffering to take his eyes off Jesus or cease living as a man for others.

We are pleased to present Michael R. Heinlein’s essay on Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., our first American Eucharistic Witness,

as we spiritually pave the way to

the National Eucharistic Congress next summer!

The Eucharist and the Sacred Heart:

A Prayer after Communion

By St. John Henry Newman

Most Sacred, most loving Heart of Jesus,

You are concealed in the Holy Eucharist,

And you beat for us still.

Now, as then, you say: “With desire I have desired.”

I worship you with all my best love and awe,

With fervent affection,

With my most subdued, most resolved will.

For a while you take up your abode within me.

O make my heart beat with your Heart!

Purify it of all that is earthly,

All that is proud and sensual,

All that is hard and cruel,

Of all perversity,

Of all disorder,

Of all deadness.

So fill it with you,

That neither the events of the day,

Nor the circumstances of the time,

May have the power to ruffle it;

But that in your love and your fear,

It may have peace.

HUMOR HIGHLIGHT

ASKING FOR MONEY

The pastor of my church hates to plead for money.

But when the coffers were running low, he had no choice.

"There's good news and there's bad news," he told the congregation.

"The good news is that we have more than enough money

for all the current and future needs of the parish.

The bad news is, it's still in your pockets."

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION

For JULY 23, 2023

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:  Mt 13:24-43

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

God’s Justice and Mercy

  • In the parable of the weeds in the field, Our Lord is revealing something that “has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.”

  • God wants men to be morally good so as to be children of the kingdom and one day in heaven “shine like the sun.”

  • Yet some men, by their actions, are morally evil, and so, children of the evil one. One day they will suffer in hell in “the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” This fate will be deserved because in the kingdom of God they have been those “who cause others to sin and [are] evildoers.”

  • This parable provides an answer to why God permits some evil. The Master in the parable says, “if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.” God does not uproot every evil now because to do so would do greater harm than good.
  • One reason God permits on-going evil is that those who do evil and cause others to sin can repent.
  • In addition, those who are “good seed” also need time to repent. It could be said that some wheat stalks want some weeds around them. Some Christians are living compromised lives.

  • Ultimately, we are either “weeds” because we do evil and follow the devil (whether or not we know it) or “wheat” because we do good and follow God (whether or not we know it).

  • We are all good seed planted in God’s garden, but we have a liking for the weeds and some of us choose to become all weed. God lets us be what we want to be, while he helps us be good if we want that. We are choosing either the most terrible fate or the best possible fate.

ANSWER TO QUIZ

Reserved for those on their deathbed, the Apostolic Pardon is a true gift of grace for the dying.

As a person draws closer to death's doors, there is one particular blessing the Church reserves for this most sacred moment:

the Apostolic Pardon.

It is a pardon that can be given by any priest, carrying the special power of removing all temporal punishment due to sin.

It is typically preceded by the Sacrament of Confession, to the extent the dying person can participate.

The priest then prays the “last blessing” (see #1 below).

It is a supreme act of mercy and has great power, drawing on the authority given to Saint Peter to “bind and loose” (Matthew 16:19).

It is a gift to a soul on their deathbed and has the added benefit of giving peace to family and friends, assuring them that they have done all they could to bring a soul closer to the gates of Paradise.

BOOK

RECOMMENDATION

We need to be armed for battle!

At all times, and especially during these crazy times in this vale of tears,

we need to lay our foundation in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual reading helps us build and strengthen that foundation.

Order though your favorite book dealer.

This week's recommendation is:

THE STORY OF A SOUL

By Saint Therese de Lisieux

Two and a half years before her death in 1897 at the age of 24,

Thérèse Martin began writing her childhood memories

at the request of her natural family's sisters in Lisieux Carmel.

Few could have guessed the eventual outcome.

Yet this Story of a Soul, first published in 1898 in a highly edited version,

quickly became a modern spiritual classic,

read by millions and translated into dozens of languages around the world.

Father John Clarke's acclaimed translation, first published in 1975

and now accepted as the standard throughout the English-speaking world,

is a faithful and unaffected rendering of Thérèse's own words,

from the original manuscripts.

This new edition, prepared for the centenary of the Saint's death,

includes a select bibliography of recent works in English on Thérèse,

along with a new referencing system now widely used in studies of her doctrine.

STUDY GUIDE FOR THE STORY OF A SOUL

We pray you will be excited to embark on purposeful

spiritual reading as a way to build a more prayer-filled,

Christ centered life.
