When you think about organizing in general, it can be fun to think about the different baskets, containers, folders, or even pull-out drawers to use. One of my favorite things to do is to go shopping for clients and then put the containers to use. Seeing the results, the space under the sink better organized, the pantry shelves tidy, and the closet organized is rewarding but the best part is seeing the look on my client’s face.
Unfortunately, there are no fun organizing supplies to use when it comes to organizing things in your digital world. It can be frustrating and time intensive. The reward comes when you know exactly what to type in to find the document or photo you’re looking for.
The other unfortunate truth is that even though we don’t see the clutter in our digital devices we need to pay attention to it.
I needed to send a document to someone the other day. I knew which folder was supposed to have this document, but it wasn’t there. I spent a solid 15 – 20 minutes hunting for it in my digital file drawers. I finally found it. I had not labeled the document myself. I was probably in a hurry when I saved it, and let the computer decide what to name this document and where to save it.
You can avoid frustrating experiences like this by doing several things.
- Come up with a naming convention that is easy to remember and use it.
- Always label your files following the naming convention you have created.
- Decide where you want to save the document before you save it.
- If you don’t have a folder for it, create one before you ‘SAVE’.
