Postscript from the Office of Advancement:

At one of our meetings last week to prepare for the start of the school year, faculty member Pat Smith '82 delivered the following remarks. Pat's youngest son, Daniel, graduated from DeMatha in June:

"I just wanted to take a moment on behalf of myself and my wife Liz to thank everyone in the room for not only teaching, guiding, engaging, challenging, encouraging, advising and caring for Daniel for the past four years, but for doing the same for his four brothers and by extension his sister, Maria.

"Joe graduated in 2007, Sean in 2009, and Nathan and Matthew in 2012. Daniel was born in 2006, and while that seems to imply that he would receive a far different education and experience than his older brothers did, that was not actually the case. And the numbers bear that out:

"Forty-seven of you have been at DeMatha for 10 or more years – 29 for 20 or more years. Many of you were here when Daniel’s brothers were here, many of you had them in class. At least three of you taught all five of them.

"Forty-three of you have had children graduate from DeMatha or have a son here now. Some of your sons attended DeMatha when Daniel’s brothers did and some had sons attend even before that.

"Thirty-two of you are DeMatha graduates yourselves, your years at DeMatha spanning the last five decades.

"Twenty-six of you had Daniel in class; several of you had him in your class in back-to-back years, and at least one of you had him in class for 2½ of his four years. Many of you engaged with him in other ways and in other moments. To have you looking out for him, being a presence for him, asking him to be accountable, asking him to look out for his classmates, seeing in him what he did not yet see in himself – it’s a gift that I am not sure can ever fully be repaid, by him or by Liz and me.

"If I did the numbers when his brothers were here, I know they would be the same. What would also be the same is the care and concern you showed for them as they made their journey. In my time at DeMatha, Dan McMahon has often said that we need to respect the man that the boy will become.

"Thank you for respecting each of them as they walked these halls, and after they left. Thank you for what you have done for Daniel, his brothers, our family and so many other families."
