COVID-19 MacGyver Moments
People are understandably trying all kinds of things to reduce their risk of illness from COVID-19 and other harmful germs.

Some are taking action because of short supplies. Others are just hoping to do their very best in a bad situation.

Today we're covering home "MacGyver"* moments that have come up during the coronavirus outbreak.

Package Disinfecting DIY?

Answer: Not a good idea, MacGyver

There is no evidence currently of food packaging being a mode of transmission for COVID-19. FDA Commissioner for Food Policy and Response Frank Yiannas addresses food packaging here .

If you have concerns about packages being contaminated, remember, a best practice is to wash your hands after handling the package!

Hand Sanitizer DIY?

Answer: Not a good idea, MacGyver.


If made incorrectly, homemade hand sanitizer can be ineffective and even cause skin burns. The FDA says it lacks verifiable information on the methods being used to prepare hand sanitizer at home and whether they are safe for use on human skin.

Solution: Proper handwashing with soap and water for 20 seconds.
* To "MacGyver" means to make or repair (usually an object) in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand.
Buying Perishables in Bulk? Tips for Safety!
For many people particularly those on a tight budget and many in rural areas home food delivery is not an option. For these people, their local food retailer is their  source for food and other basics for isolating at home.
