Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine

For this month's Equity and Belonging section, we asked our DEI summer intern, Trevor Marshall, to share a few words on what "Health Equity in Hospital Medicine" means to them:

"Health equity to me means not just providing equal quality of care to all, but care that takes into consideration and tries to combat the years of institutional discrimination that is still unfortunately embedded in our society today. And equitable care can only be achieved through trust building and a genuine relationship with all our patients. It is all about the people." - Trevor Marshall, Summer '24 DEI Intern

Salman Rahman

"Dr. Salman Rahman — Thank you for your time and caring when helping with a difficult patient in the ED/CDU today. Often Cardiology triage attendings can be quite curt or even cold with avoiding cardiology admissions. Your kindness, professionalism and interprofessional skills do not go unnoticed. Your clear and kind explanations for why this patient did not need to be admitted cupped with your already checking with cards attending and clear plan for dropping a note to support your recommendations is truly appreciated. Exceptional work, thank you! You’re clearly are an amazing doctor and colleague!"

- Ryan Wilson

Aylin Ulku

"Dr. Aylin Ulku is the epitome of kindness and professionalism when it comes to her work as an MD here at UCSF. She is amazing to work with and I always look forward to the times when I know her and I's schedule align."

- Derrick Manalac

Sam Brondfield

"I'm grateful to Sam Brondfield for his exceptional care of a mutual pt with a new diagnosis of metastatic cancer. After being notified of the patient's post-discharge challenges accessing time-sensitive outpatient oncologic care, Sam not only facilitated expediting a new appointment by more than a month (!) but also promptly identified a systems improvement opportunity for similar patients, escalated to Cancer Center leadership, and developed a draft protocol to address this gap. This is only one example of many of Sam's daily outstanding physicianship — thank you, Sam!"
