Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine

This section of the newsletter was initiated by our former colleague Dr. Sneha Daya (now at MedStar Georgetown) and highlights pearls in equity and belonging. We are so grateful to Dr. Yalda Shahram for managing this section since 2022, where she has brought many teaching points and highlighted work from our Social Medicine Core, the Tea House Series, and the Health Advocates program. As Yalda takes a hiatus from managing this part of the newsletter, we want to take a moment and celebrate the positive impact she has had. Thank you Yalda!

Reminder! The Code CARE team has launched a new simulation series through Code CARE to practice Anti-Racist De-Escalation skills with multidisciplinary colleagues. This is a great opportunity to learn and apply skills that can help you improve patient care and communication during challenging moments.

Priya Prasad, Armond Esmaili, Yumiko Abe-Jones, Sandra Oreper, Colin Hubbard, Margaret Fang, and Kirsten Kangelaris recently published a study in the Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians Open showing that, among patients with suspected septic shock, those not receiving guideline-adherent antibiotic therapy within an hour of incident hypotension presented with more hypotension-associated comorbidities (heart failure, cirrhosis) and lower prevalence of SIRS, clinical characteristics that may explain delayed clinician recognition of sepsis.

Physician-Nurse Communication QI Initiative

We want to share some of the specific recognitions we have received directly from our nursing colleagues about our hospitalists’ communication with bedside nurses.  These quotes were anonymously submitted as free response comments by various nurses on 14L, 14M, and 15L through our ongoing RN communication survey.

"All the providers I've worked with on Goldman, especially Dr. David Arboleda and Dr. Brad Monash, are good about reaching out when bedside and including everyone present in the convo."

– 14M RN

"I worked with Dr. Natasha Spottiswoode for the past 2 days. She checked in with me first thing in the morning. Family was very anxious, but she was so patient and caring and made a point to take time to update the family. I really appreciated her hard work."

– 14M RN

"Dr. Esther Hsiang has displayed the golden standard of nurse-physician communication. She has relayed the plan and invited the nurse to bedside rounds. She has also been very responsive to nursing concerns."

 – 14M RN

Thank you for your continued engagement in efforts to improve physician-nurse communication!

– Sarah Flynn and Esther Hsiang, Improving Physician-Nurse Communication QI Initiative Champions
