Project Title: Building a Hospital-Based Learning System to Foster Infection Prevention Among Hospitalists

Description: This project will entail taking a multi-pronged approach to develop and implement interventions that target hospitalists and nurses on predominantly medicine floors/units to decrease CAUTI rates, while measuring the project’s effects on CAUTI rates via a DHM True North metric. I aim to redesign and optimize clinicians' workflow using CAUTI prevention as a test case that offers the opportunity to build a structure of infection prevention that will act as a scaffold for future prevention of other types of HAIs.

Project Title: Establishing a Preoperative Medical Optimization Clinic

Description: In collaboration with the UCSF Neurosurgery, we will be establishing a Preoperative Medical Optimization (PreMO) clinic for complex Neuro-spine patients. UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine is uniquely placed given its experience and expertise in perioperative medical management to provide this service. The first of this 2-year project will focus on building the PreMO clinic and establishing content for training of faculty in preoperative medical optimization. The second year will focus on expanding the established model to other specialties.

Physician-Nurse Communication QI Initiative

We want to share some of the specific recognitions we have received directly from our nursing colleagues about our hospitalists' communication with bedside nurses. These quotes were anonymously submitted as free response comments by various nurses on 14L, 14M, and 15L through our ongoing RN communication survey.

"The nurses greatly appreciate every physician trying their best to always communicate with their bedside RN their patient's plan of care for the day as this greatly impact patients' care and safety, and Goldman Med Hospitalist are rocking it! Thank you! I hope we continue to spread this culture to other teams as well."

– 15L RN

"I want to give a shout out to Dr. Prashant Patel, who was amazing to work with! Great communication and very responsive to my messages. I truly felt like we were working together to get this patient the care she needed. I appreciate how he frequently checked in and kept me in the loop."

 – 14L RN

"Dr. Armond Esmaili, Dr. Rashmi Manjunath, and Dr. Archna Eniasivam reached out to me via Voalte text on the plan for the day. I appreciate the early update on the plan of care as this helped me to also plan out my day and anticipate the needs for my patients. All 3 of them continued to communicate to me throughout the day and were very responsive."

– 15L RN

"Dr. Erin Yao-Cohen was very attentive and called me to discuss the patient early in the morning. It is always good to work with her."

 – 14M RN

"Dr. Charles Chu and Dr. Shubhra Gupta were responsive to pages and providing updates on plan of care."

 – 15L RN

"Dr. Esther Hsiang communicated extremely effectively and ensured I was aware of bedside rounding time. Additionally, she reached out early with the plan and communicated changes to me as they occurred."

 – 14M RN

"Dr. Brad Sharpe is excellent."

– 15L RN

Thank you for your continued engagement in efforts to improve physician-nurse communication!
