WIEC receives $2.5 million state grant for

broadband project; Governor Evers visits

The Washington Island Electric Cooperative (WIEC) hosted Governor Tony Evers and community leaders May 25 to share firsthand updates on the Island's transformative broadband project.

The governor's visit followed a $2.5 million broadband access grant that WIEC received from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission aimed at expanding the Island's fiber optic network project.

The grant will help WIEC begin the final phase of bringing fiber internet to more than 1,000 Washington Island locations by the end of the project in 2025.

The project will enhance digital connectivity for residents and businesses, foster economic growth and support the Island community, said WIEC Manager Robert Cornell.

"It's really a game-changer for the Island," said Cornell.

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Child Care Benefit Pilot Program aimed

at assisting local employers and workers

Door County employers and workers who are dependent on child care services are being offered assistance through the United Way of Door County's Child Care Benefit Pilot Program.

The program provides Door County employers the opportunity to offer a child care stipend to their employees with matching funds provided by the Women's Fund of Door County.

Families with full-time employment and at least one child under the age of 5 in child care may be eligible to receive a $300 per month child care benefit. There are some income guidelines, but each application will be considered on its own merits. Families with part-time employment would receive a $150 monthly benefit.

Employers that participate in the nine-month program make monthly payments to United Way, which then matches their funds with the Women’s Fund portion and pays providers directly. Participants will be asked to regularly assess the program to determine whether it will be continued at the end of the pilot period.

To apply, or for more information, contact Molly Gary, childcare community coordinator at United Way Door County (920) 421-3149 or molly@unitedwaydc.com
