EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT IN A DIVERSE WORLD
Sheri Dougherty
 Dr. Sherilyne Dougherty, CEO

Employee engagement is persistently on the minds of executives and managers committed to the success of their employees and organizations. Today, getting buy-in from employees on organizational strategy and goals can be complicated: the American workforce is incredibly diverse, with three generations now inhabiting our work places. Leaders must meet employees where they are on the communications continuum with messaging they will be receptive to via the channels they use most. But it is more than that. Think of employees as stakeholders you have been hired to reach and ask yourself: What action do I want them to take and how can I inspire them to take that action? Engage their hearts, and their minds will be yours.

I hope you enjoy our focus on employee engagement in October's edition of DAI Solutions Advisor.
ENGAGED EMPLOYEES EQUAL SUCCESS

Improving employee engagement is not simply about improving productivity - although organizations with a high level of engagement do report 22 percent higher productivity, according to a Gallup Organization's analysis of 1.4 million employees.

Strong employee engagement promotes a variety of outcomes that are good for employees, clients and organizations. For instance, organizations with highly engaged employees:
  • Have twice the rate of success of organizations where engagement is low
  • Have lower absenteeism and turnover
  • Report improved quality of work and health

Often, leaders think that defining their strategy is the most important activity they will perform all year. But, in reality, getting their workforce aligned with that strategy is even more critical. And that engagement starts by involving the workforce in the creation of strategic goals from the outset.

Receiving feedback from employees is one of the most effective ways to determine how success can be achieved because they are the "boots on the ground," and often have innovative and creative ideas. But even more than letting the workforce influence ideas about the organization's strategy, the strategy must be one that employees believe in.
