Weekly Update & Happy President's Day | |
Happy Friday, District 5, and leading into the long weekend, happy President's Day! The holiday falls annually on the third Monday of February, and the observance honors the nearby birthdays of Presidents George Washington (on February 22nd) and Abraham Lincoln (on February 12th). For many, it has since expanded to stand as a general day of appreciation for our country’s notable leaders throughout history.
With the observance of President's Day on February 19th, many city services and facilities will be closed, including our CD5 office. Refuse and recycling will be collected as regularly scheduled, but there will be no street sweeping or associated parking enforcement on Monday. Click here for a full list of affected facilities and services.
This weekend, there are a number of special events and activities within CD5. Start Saturday off with your morning coffee at the grand opening of Coffee Drunk in Bixby Knolls! Help us welcome their new location into the neighborhood by stopping by 4347 Atlantic Ave to show your support. Afterwards, from 11am – 2pm, just across the street, stop by the Expo Arts Center for “Legacy of Resilience,” a Black History Month Luncheon Celebration. The event is free, but seats are limited; be sure to RSVP! Then, you can head over to LBX for a “Paw-lentine’s Party” on the Hangar Lawn from 12pm – 5pm. Bring your furry friend along to shop from pet-friendly vendors and participate in a pet parade! On Sunday, you can cruise through Bixby Knolls with neighbors of all ages at this month’s KIDical Mass Neighborhood Bike Ride, starting at 11am behind Pixie Toys. Don’t forget your helmet! As you make plans for next week, mark your calendars for a Community Event at Relativity Space on Saturday, February 24th. See flyers below for more information about these and other great events.
In the weeks to come, continue to find even more Black History Month programs and events all over Long Beach! Celebrate and learn at the public libraries, the Aquarium, LBCC, and more. Coming up on Tuesday, February 20th, you can groove to classic jazz tunes and learn about important figures of Black history at Jazz & Bingo at the Dana Branch Library. Bring the learning home from the library, too, with printable pdfs of bingo cards, quilt patterns, and coloring pages, or by checking out books from the BHM 2024 reading list.
While it seems there are always reasons to celebrate, we remember that there are reasons to pause and reflect on loss as well. Next Saturday, February 24th, the New Hope Grief Support Community is holding their second annual “Rhythms of Grief” community event, where anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one can come together to discover the healing power of art and music. Join in healing with the community as the all-ages interactive session will allow you to connect with others in a supportive environment and pay tribute and honor to lost loved ones. See the flyer below for more details.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be on Tuesday, February 20th at 5pm. The maintenance is complete, and we will be back in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,

The Wardlow Project
Current Info on Project at 1131 E Wardlow
Many of our neighbors have reached out to my office with concerns over the plans for a new affordable housing project at 1131 E Wardlow Rd. We want to take a moment to assure you that we hear your concerns, and we wish to provide you with what our office knows.
On January 17, 2024, the Long Beach Community Investment Company Board of Directors voted unanimously to purchase and convert a vacant commercial building at Cerritos Avenue and Wardlow Road into affordable housing.
As we have been briefed by the Community Development Department, this is an ongoing process that can take well over a year. No plans for development have been approved at this time. The proposed development is not set in stone and will be required to follow the standard planning review process. The city is actively engaging with a developer to ensure the best possible outcome for the site.
The units at this site will be available to families with household incomes between 30% and 80% of the area median income. Many of the households who will be living there are making $26,000 - $90,000, and work in the surrounding community. This commitment to affordability is central to our vision of a diverse and inclusive city.
We recognize the concerns being raised by our community. The city and this office are dedicated to ensuring that future development on this site, which is not within but adjacent to the Historic District, respects and honors the unique history of Cal Heights. The Community Development Department plans to hold a community meeting to address queries and concerns about this project in the near future. We will share the date of the meeting once it has been confirmed.
For your reference, below are links to relevant information regarding this project.
This project is a proactive step toward creating a more equitable Long Beach. By providing homes for families with a range of incomes we continue to add to the vitality of our diverse community. As the development of this site continues and we find out more information, we will keep you updated via our newsletters.
