November News

Happy Friday District 5! November is here: a time for family gatherings, shared meals, giving thanks, and spreading joy. It’s also time to “fall back,” so don’t forget to turn your clocks back this weekend and enjoy that extra hour of sleep. Though the days are getting shorter, the list of things to do is not! Keep reading for City updates and plenty of community events.

In observance of Election Day, several City of Long Beach facilities and services will be closed on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The City annually observes the first Tuesday in November as a Citywide holiday, regardless of election activity taking place in Long Beach. Services at City Hall will be closed, including the District 5 office. Click here to learn more and find a list of which services and facilities will be affected.

Public Works has informed us that tree trimming in the District 5 areas of Grid 8 is set to begin on Monday, November 6. They will be starting in the southwest corner of the area, on Spring and Woodruff, continuing northeast to Los Coyotes Diagonal and Studebaker. See the Public Works section below for more details.

As for events, we have tonight’s First Fridays in Bixby Knolls, and tomorrow, November 4's Día De Los Muertos parade downtown. Then next weekend, come to the Long Beach Veterans' Day Celebration at Houghton Park on November 11, from 11am-4pm. Enjoy the veterans and community resource fair, as well as live entertainment, food trucks, a kids zone, historic aircraft flyovers, and more! That weekend you can also join Parkview Village’s Second Saturdays for a Fall Festival Block Party on November 11, and Willow Springs’ Listening in the Park on Sunday, November 12. More information on these upcoming events can be found in the flyers below.

Don’t forget about the upcoming Coffee with a Commander sessions in both the East and North Divisions! Meet with East Division Commander Pennino on Wednesday November 8 at 9am at The Local Grind. The following week, North Division Commander Gallo will be at SteelCraft Long Beach at 5pm on Monday November 13. Commander Gallo will also be holding a North Division Commander’s Forum, at Jordan High School on Wednesday November 8 at 6pm. See the flyers below for more information on these opportunities to connect with your LBPD area Commanders.

Finally, I'd like to remind everyone that our next Council Meeting will be Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 5pm. A list of the items of interest will be provided in a future newsletter; I encourage you to attend, or watch online

Parkway Tree Trimming in Grid 8

The trimming of Grid 8 is expected to take 3 to 3 and a half months. As trimming commences, the team will have a Certified Arborist onsite every day to oversee the process. Please keep in mind that the trees Citywide are trimmed in accordance with the criteria set by the International Society of Arboriculture, the National Arborist Association, and the American National Standards Institute.

The trimming will be performed in the following order:

  • Section 1: Area bounded by Woodruff Ave, N Studebaker Rd, Spring St, Wardlow Rd
  • Section 2: Area bounded by Woodruff Ave to N Studebaker Rd, E Carson St to Wardlow Rd
  • Section 3: Area bounded by N Studebaker Rd to Stevely Ave, E Carson St to E Spring St
  • Not included: Area bounded by Woodruff Ave, Conquista Ave, Parkcrest St, E Conant St- territory is Los Angeles County

Please note, the trims may look different for each tree species. For example, the Ficus trees will be trimmed with a "Crown Reduction" cut, a more intensive trim that reduces the area of the crown by about 20%. As the Ficus trees are sturdy enough to withstand the more substantial cut, this is done to keep the trees in good shape until the next tree-trimming cycle, and reduce the need for costly out-of-cycle trimming.

If you have any question or concerns regarding tree trimming in Council District 5, please call (562) 570-2722, see the Public Works webpage on trees, or reach out to my office with any questions.

Fall Is Here - Friendly Reminder

Fall is here which means falling leaves are plentiful! Our Public Works team reminds us to please avoid piling leaves and other debris in the street, alley, or gutter. Street sweepers have difficulty removing large piles and are unable to pick up palm fronds and big piles of pine needles. For large piles of debris you can always contact Public Works’ Clean Team on their webpage or submit a request via GoLongBeach

Long Beach Airport Comprehensive Report

On September 12, I submitted an Item to the City Council requesting the City Manager and relevant departments complete a comprehensive report on the general aviation practices at Long Beach Airport (LGB), with special attention to the issues I have heard from many of you. Earlier this week, this report was delivered. You can find it here to learn, as my team and I will, the facts and figures regarding the flight schools, noise, air pollution, and more. This report is intended to provide a baseline of information on these issues, to facilitate constructive conversations and help identify possible courses of action moving forward.

Thank you for your continued engagement on this issue, and thank you for your patience as we have awaited this report. This item, with a presentation from the City Manager’s office, Airport, and City Attorney’s Office, is expected to be brought before City Council in the coming weeks. We will keep you informed of the date when it is finalized, should you want to bring forth a public comment then. In the meantime, you may continue to direct any questions or comments to my office.

Long Beach has extended its Safe Parking Program and relocated the operating site to a larger, medium-term location near the City’s Multi-Service Center (MSC).

Check Before You Burn: A Message from South Coast AQMD

November marks the start of the South Coast AQMD’s annual Check Before You Burn season. From November through the end of February, residents are asked to check whether a No-Burn Day has been declared before burning wood fireplaces to limit emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

A No-Burn day is a 24-hour ban on wood-burning in residential fireplaces, stoves or outdoor fire pits in the South Coast Air Basin. South Coast AQMD forecasters call for residential No-Burn Days when PM2.5 is expected to reach Unhealthy levels due to air emissions and stagnant weather conditions.
