Updates: Public Works Projects

Chamblee Dunwoody Road at Womack Road Intersection Improvement Project

Thank you for your patience with final paving for the Womack/Chamblee Dunwoody Road intersection improvement project. It was important to complete paving before traffic picks up next week with the start of the new school year. The goal is to have the intersection fully operational before Monday.

Please note that we still have important steps left to complete the project, and some steps will impact traffic flow. They include the following: completing a few sections of sidewalk, lane striping, and landscaping.

Based on citizen input, this project was added to the City’s Transportation Plan in 2018. Improvements to make the intersection more efficient and improve safety include the following: a new left turn lane and removal of the right turn restriction on Womack Road, extension of the left turn lane from Chamblee Dunwoody Road to Perimeter Center Parkway, and sidewalk work to meet current ADA standards.

Dunwoody High School Path Project

The northern section of the new Dunwoody High School Path is almost complete. The new wider path stretches from the DHS driveway to Vanderlyn Drive and will accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists traveling in both directions. Crews continue working to lay sod and build the retaining wall.

This project supports students walking and biking to and from DHS and Vanderlyn and was prioritized due to ADA compliance issues with the old sidewalk. Trees will be planted during cooler months, and lighting will be added at the end of the project. To minimize the impact on school operations, the project was split into two phases. The next phase is scheduled for next summer. The project is being funded by SPLOST.

Support for families struggling with mental illness

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-week course for families, partners, and friends of individuals with serious mental illness taught by trained NAMI family members and caregivers of individuals living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder. The course aims to guide family members to emotional understanding, healing, insight, and action. The program allows family members to move at their own emotional pace, vs. pushing the “intellectual/cognitive” learning (head) part of the course, and focusing on the integration of self-selected knowledge and “emotional understanding” (heart).

Described by many family members as life-changing, this course provides caregivers with communication and problem-solving techniques, coping strategies, and the self-care skills needed to deal with their loved one’s mental illness as well as the impact on their family.

The upcoming class is on Sundays from Sept. 10 - Oct. 29. This class runs from 2 - 4:30 p.m. at Dunwoody United Methodist Church, 1548 Mt Vernon Rd. It is in person only. For more information and to register, please email Bob Levinson: rnlevinsonnami@gmail.com
