WHISKEY RUN MOUNTAIN BIKE NEEDS ASSESSMENT RESULTS

Travel Southern Oregon Coast (TSOC) and the Oregon South Coast Regional Tourism Network (OSCRTN) and Judith Ann Mogan Foundation contracted with Oregon State University to conduct a survey of mountain bikers at Whiskey Run in September 2021. The goal was to determine the recreation needs of mountain bikers at Whiskey Run Mountain Biking Trail System.

Below are a few highlights:

  • Most bikers are male, affluent, and more educated
  • 31% of bikers are local to Coos County & about 18% are from out of state
  • 54% of bikers are intermediate level, 28% expert level
  • Most bikers learn about Whiskey Run from word of mouth
  • 40% of bikers recreate in groups of 3-5 people
  • More than half of the bikers ride 3-4 hours per day
  • Average satisfaction with trails is 4.5 out of 5
WHISKEY RUN MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL SYSTEM VISITOR SPENDING SURVEY

A little background... The inspiration for this project came from an email sent to Coos County Commissioner Cribbins. A lover of the Whiskey Run Mountain Biking Trail System voluntarily sent praise and a breakdown of their spending while in town with the goal of supporting continued investment in the trail system. We thought; would more visitors be willing to share this information? How can we engineer and encourage this?

The goal... Collect spending information from visitors who come to the area specifically to ride Whiskey Run Trails and utilize this information to support future investment in the Whiskey Run Mountain Biking Trails System.

The execution... Create a survey, signature sticker & poster, and incentivize cyclists with prizes. The posters and stickers will be posted at the three main Whiskey Run trailheads, local bike shops in Bandon, Coos Bay, and North Bend, as well as digitally on our TSOC social media accounts. Additionally, our sticker and flyer will be included in the Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Festival participant packets.

TOSC will continue this survey into the future and offer prizes on a quarterly schedule with the goal of tapping into a consistent data source. We will be able to monitor the cycles of visitation and spending at Whiskey Run, assessing and improving the process as we go.
OREGON RANKED MOST BICYCLE-FRIENDLY STATE ON THE WEST COAST, 2ND IN THE NATION

Bicycle Friendly State Report Card ranked Oregon No. 1 of 50 for safety and No. 1 of 50 for the percentage of commuters biking to work. The state also received several “A” scores.

The League of American Bicyclists, which issues the annual report, put Massachusetts at the top of the list. For No. 2 Oregon, the report pointed to several areas in which the state could improve, such as spending more on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
