I wanted to pass this security alert on to everyone. If you are using Kaspersky software on any of your computers or mobile devices, I recommend that you uninstall it, cancel your account of you pay for a subscription and install another anti-virus solution, such as Microsoft Defender which is free.
Why am I recommending this?
Kaspersky has been problematic since the mid 2010’s because it is a Russian business, out of Russia itself. Because Kaspersky software manages anti-virus and security on computers the software collects a lot of information about your computer - and possibly yourself.
Because the nature of the Russian government, Kaspersky at least has the risk of being taken over by the government or the information it has collected about the computers it is supposed to protect being turned over to the government.
Back in the early mid 2010’s we did rely on Kaspersky for AV services in our organization, however by 2015 we discontinued our reliance on it, moving to another provider because of growing concerns, even back then. Now late this week, The US government has finally made an important and wise decision, although almost 10 years after we chose to stop using it ourselves.
This week President Biden issued a ban on the sale of all Kaspersky security software in the U.S., effective immediately. The ban also extends to the use of Kaspersky software starting September 29, and it applies to consumers, government and business organizations. Critically, the ban includes security updates for existing customers.
The Department of Commerce has issued what’s called a final determination prohibiting Kaspersky and its affiliates from transactions in the U.S. This makes it illegal to sell, integrate or license any Kaspersky cybersecurity software on national security grounds.
So, to conclude. Double check what anti-virus/security solution you are using on your computers and mobile devices. If Kaspersky is installed, uninstall it and move to another provider.
