review:  Jackson Kayak Fun & 4Fun   revised for 2015

Jackson Kayak has completely redesigned the Fun and 4Fun** for 2015.  The new Fun is aimed more at river running with playboating added in to make getting down the river more fun than ever.  The 2015 models excel at surfing, squirting, cartwheeling and more. They have even more foot room with a side-flair for more stability in boils and currents, which also makes them even easier to roll.   For 2015 the bow is more rockered making it easier to keep water off the deck and it easier to cross eddylines and boils. Advanced kayakers will find these to be great all around river running kayaks up to a class IV, while beginners will be challenged with a forgiving playboat that will help them excel at learning to play.

Jackson Kayak focused on making a light kayak so it is outfitted with HappyFeet and foam instead of the heavier anti-shock bulkheads featured in the Zen & Karma.

The updated Fun will paddle larger than the 2010-14 models, but it is smaller than the 2010 4 Fun.  The 4 Fun is also larger than the previous models but smaller than the 2010 Super Fun.  Playing on moving water will be easy and more relaxed but because of the changes to make them better river runners it will be harder to initiate flat water moves such as flat water cartwheels.

Keeping your Extremities Warm in Winter Weather
Keeping your extremities warm in cold winter weather can be difficult even for the warmest blooded kayakers.   With a few hints you can stay warm this season.

1)  Stay Hydrated:  dehydration=cold body
2)  Dress for the water temperature.  Drysuits with drysocks are
the best choice.  Do not wear any cotton.
3)  Keep simple snacks on hand.  You burn more energy in
      cold weather.
4)  Relieve Yourself.  It takes extra energy to keep full bladder
5)  Be ready with a plan.  In case you get cold have extra
clothing and have an exit plan.

Hands - Use either Neoprene Gloves, Mittens or Pogies.  Gloves insulate individual fingers and are available in different thicknesses.  Gloves give you the feeling of lots of dexterity, but they can be hard to keep completely dry.  Gloves can be slippery on a wet shaft, try the Glacier Glove, NRS Maverick or Stohlquist Maw for the best cold water gloves with good grip.  Find the best one for your hand shape.  Gloves do make it hard to grip the shaft if you have small hands and the shaft will feel bigger because of the thickness of the neoprene.  Mittens, such as Kokatat Inferno Mitts or NRS Toaster Mitts, provide the most amount of warmth since all your fingers are together, but they don't provide much dexterity.  Pogies fit around the paddle shaft and you slide your hand in and grip the paddle directly.  Pogies provide direct grip on the paddle and are suprisingly warm.  Make sure you get a Pogie that you can get in an out of easily (neoprene pogies such as the SnapDragon Hot Hands or HyperHands or Stohlquist Toasters are easier to use than fabric ones with elastic at the wrist).  With pogies your hands can get cold when you are not gripping the paddle.  In the coldest of weather consider doubling up, such as  wearing two layers of gloves or combining gloves with pogies.
Gloves, Pogies & Mittens  *also see the HyperHand Pogies featured at the top of this page.

Feet - Neoprene Booties are available in different thicknesses and some are lined with extra insulating layers such a fleece or titanium.  If you are sea kayaking consider getting a pair of knee high Mukluks which will keep the inside of the bootie from getting wet.  For winter use consider adding an extra layer of insulation such as wool, polartec or thin neoprene socks.  If you are using a drysuit wear heavier socks that you use in warmer months.  Also if you are in a drysuit and your drysocks don't have any leaks you can use chemical toe warmer packets like hikers and skiers use in their boots. While in your kayak much of the cold you feet feel is transferred from the water through your boat hull up to your feet on the bottom of the boat.  Add an extra layer of insulation on the hull of your boat such as a layer of minicell foam on the bottom of the hull to rest your feet.
Footwear  -  Call us to order minicell foam

Head - You head is a crucial to staying warm, we lose much of  our heat through our head.  Use a skull cap such as the Kokatat Surfskin or NRS Mystery.  They are available in different configurations from basic skull caps to balaclavas depending on what type of paddling and whether you are using a helmet. (hint: skull caps that cover your ears are warmer than those that don't)   If you are sea kayaking and not rolling use a polartec or wool ski hat over the top or use a waterproof hat such as the Kokatat Goretex Nor'wester or Kokatat Tropos SeaWester which will also provide rain protection.  If you are rolling use two skull caps to increase the warmth and also be sure to use your earplugs such as Doc's ProPlugs (earplugs make a huge difference in cold water).  Helmets which have fewer holes will be warmer than those with lots of ventilation.  If you are wearing a Gath Helmet, be sure to add the ear pieces and slide close vents at your ears. Put your skull cap on before you get out of your car at the put-in so you head stays warm from the start.
Headwear & Skull Caps  -  Gath Helmet  - call us to order Doc's ProPlugs ear plugs
