Unfortunately, we found ~10 (or less) plants, ranging in size from about 1-2 feet off the bottom up to approximately 6 or 7 feet tall. NHDES was alerted right away and helped us to coordinate with divers who will hand-pull the plants on June 5.
We do not have any reason to believe that this infestation is widespread in the lake but we will be checking over the next few weeks and throughout the summer. We have also alerted our Invasive Watchers, a network of over 50 volunteers around the lake, to be extra vigilant this season to keep an eye out for curly-leaf pondweed and other invasive species. We can never have too many eyes on the water, so if you are interested in becoming an Invasive Watcher, please send an email to Susie at susieb@lakesunapee.org.
Below is a picture taken last week of curly-leaf pondweed in Baptist Pond which is the closest known location of this invasive species. Here are some identification tips:
- Edges of leaves are wavy (like lasagna noodles) and have small “teeth”
- Leaves are alternate on stem & are more dense toward end (tip) of branches
- It starts growing and blooms earlier than most other aquatic plants
