Greetings!

Calling to mind the important community work of the late Mrs. Peggy Gaskins

Thirteen years ago on June 1st, 2010, The CommUNITY Breakfast was dreamed up, at the end of a reception held at historic Radnor United Methodist Church, 930 Conestoga Road, Bryn Mawr, in Garrett Hill (now St. John AME Church, Bryn Mawr), which was hosted by Mrs. Janita Mahoney. The reception was held immediately following the rededication of Radnor’s 5th ward park as Bishop Richard Allen Park, located on Brook Street.

The late Mrs. Peggy Gaskins of Bethel AME Church, Bryn Mawr, Pastor Joe Di Paolo of Wayne United Methodist Church, Wayne and Anne Minicozzi of Villanova University along with Mahoney all agreed we missed seeing each other at the Radnor Township “Unity Breakfast” held each September from 2001 through 2008 at Villanova University. We agreed to try holding a “pay for your own breakfast” event once and to see what the response would be.

The rest is history. We held the first “Undoing Racism Day” the following September 21, 2011 at the University. Staffed by a steering committee of community volunteers, "The CommUNITY Breakfast" created a space where we can gather to celebrate unity while “embracing the difference.” Now a nonprofit 501(c)(3) which is staffed by an all-volunteer board of directors, the "CommUNITY Breakfast Collaborative" goes a step further with a mission "to become the beloved community through civic engagement: Dialogue, Education, Networking, Prayer and Action."

Pictured from left to right in this photo taken June 1, 2010 at the Park are Rev. Carlos Bounds, then Pastor, Bethel AME Church, Bryn Mawr; Bishop Richard F. Norris; Rev. Mark Kelly Tyler, PhD, Pastor of Mother Bethel AME Church, Philadelphia; and the late Mrs. Peggy Gaskins, Bethel AME Church, Bryn Mawr.

Today we are grateful to call to mind the important community work of the late Mrs. Peggy Gaskins. Her legacy continues. AM

Meeting ID: 953 4844 9875

Passcode: 098069

You are invited to join the thirty-fifth meeting of “Uncomfortable Conversations” on Zoom, devoted to the issue of race in the country. Please share this invitation with others who may be interested to participate.

These meetings are intended to provide learning opportunities from personal stories and experiences of people who have been directly affected. These personal stories and experiences may be better appreciated if one looks back on the past with a view to understand how as a nation we have gotten to this point!

The presenter at the next “Uncomfortable Conversations” series is Mrs. Loraine Carter.

Without realizing it as an indicator of a lifelong interest in children's education, Loraine was a substitute teacher in the New Orleans, Louisiana elementary schools shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Psychology degree. She relocated to New Orleans to better understand the plight of Blacks in America, figuring that great city to be an epicenter of Black history. Eventually, she pursued graduate work at Boston University's School of Social Work, focusing on community organization, management, and planning before obtaining a Master of Education at Temple University in Urban Education. Loraine has extensive experience in education advocacy, working with parents and the community to facilitate their understanding of navigating the education system. She is among the founders and board members of Box Lunch & A Book, a summer literacy and food security program on the Mainline. Loraine facilitates the Community Conversations series and Special Education Buddies, initiated through Box Lunch & A Book. She served as president of Concerned Black Parents for nearly ten years in Lower Merion. Loraine is the founder and executive director of the Philadelphia Literacy Initiative, an intergenerational high-impact literacy service for kindergarten to grade three students striving to learn to read on grade level. The program launched intergenerational prekindergarten classroom support in 2023 and will continue impacting the lives of young scholars in the greater Philadelphia region. She held similar responsibilities with AARP Foundation Experience Corps Philadelphia for a decade.
