Message from the Mayor

2024 King’s Birthday Honours List

I would like to congratulate three recipients of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division on the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List. Congratulations to Jonathan Scott Gleeson of Lidcombe, who was awarded for service to Martial Arts, Marie-Louise Marisa Previtera of Greystanes, who was awarded for service to the Maltese community of NSW and Maria Jeanette McConville who was awarded for service to athletics. Council will be organising a Mayoral reception to congratulate the recipients later in the year. I recently attended a Cultural Event in Parramatta held by the Uttarakhandi Association of Sydney. The evening was a memorable celebration of Uttarakhandi culture and heritage and was lively with traditional folk music, dancing, traditional attire and paintings that tie back to the homeland of Uttarakhand in Northern India. The Uttarakhandi Association of Sydney serves as a cultural bridge, uniting individuals with the common thread of Uttarakhandi heritage.

ADSI 2024 Refugee Celebration Dinner

The Accessible Diversity Services Initiative Limited (ADSI) celebrated Refugee Week with a lovely event in Guildford. The night was filled with celebrations, entertainment, fun and culture, and showcased the talents of our local refugees and recognised their contributions to our community. Thank you to ADSI for a great event and for supporting migrants and refugees in Cumberland for the past 28 years.

Sudanese Cultural Day Celebration & Launch of SAHWA

The Sudanese Australian Health and Wellbeing Association (SAHWA) and the Western Sydney Local Health District recently held the Sudanese Cultural Day Celebration. SAHWA presented their work plan for July 2024 to June 2025, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Sudanese Australians and provide an opportunity for the community to support each other and improve social isolation. SAHWA works to improve health outcomes, including issues facing the Sudanese community, particularly women and young people, residing in Cumberland.
