The Leader's Edge - March 2016
|
|
Spring is on its way!
Spring is an incredible time of renewal and growth. One of my favorite events is the blooming of our cherry tree. The old, gray trunk and branches of the cherry blossoms supports the new fresh greenery and blooms with their riotous color. It is a truly an inspirational time of year!
I often like to think of Spring as the Earth's time to put on its best suit and impress us all with its glory!
In the same way as these beautiful flowering trees, we as leaders bloom from our
older lessons and experiences, and take opportunities to grow and show our best selves! An important part of leadership is inspiring others to have confidence in our leadership ability, and our executive presence is a big component of that. Our outward appearance, the way we talk, and the way we interact and build trust with those around us all contribute to our Executive Presence (EP).
Sadly though, the definition of just what EP is and how to improve it can be as elusive as a the sun on these rainy spring days. Thus our Leadership Maturity Competency theme for the month of March is
Executive Presence. We hope you'll enjoy exploring what EP is and how to cultivate it, as well as going deeper into other aspects of EP like courageous leadership and political savvy in our weekly Self Coaching series.

March Leadership Maturity Theme: Executive Presence
|
|
Not familiar with our Leadership Maturity Model? Well, it's at the core of everything we do. Depending on whether you or your team member is entry level, new to your organization, or a senior level executive, there are core competencies that are necessary for successful progression on the Leadership Climb. These leadership competencies, defined by our team of seasoned leaders and coaches in the MSBCOACH Leadership Maturity Model, help to create the backbone of the way we coach and train the leaders we work with everyday.

Executive Presence
The third competency that we are going to explore is in the
Summit Approach
level. This means it is a fairly advanced competency on the Leadership Climb. However, we believe that while the more experienced leaders in an organization will have mastered these skills and characteristics, leaders of all levels will be working on developing them on their own leadership journey.

Leaders with Executive Presence continually work to create a positive perception of their leadership abilities in the workplace, demonstrate Courageous Leadership or gravitas in the face of trying or stressful times and employ Political Savvy to advance their objectives.

Executive Presence Whitepaper Highlight:
Possibly, the most challenging is statement a leader hears is from their boss, stakeholder or board member is “You need to work on your executive presence”. Unfortunately, this statement is elusive - leaders are left guessing what exactly needs improvement and/or creating their own conclusions.
Perhaps their boss isn’t sure how to articulate what they need to do in order to improve. Defining just what “IT” is can be like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. Often people will say, “you just know when someone has it….” or “that person really has presence – they must be born with it….”.

Executive Presence Blog Highlight:
Owning is such a positive word. It conveys the simple message of a child…it’s mine. Look a little deeper into the meaning and we think about the work to procure something of value and taking responsibility to care for that something.
In leadership training, there is similar effort and care that goes into owning your leadership presence. “To own” conveys an understanding of what we commit to as leaders. Consider the nuance of owning your leadership role:

Executive Presence, or EP, has become a common term in leadership development; however it is not easily defined and can be a challenge to identify what a leader needs to do in order to establish it.
Is EP the way you dress, talk (voice tone... inflection), or enter a room? Or perhaps it’s the way you choose a seat at the table, handle conflict, or build trust? Maybe, it's how you communicate or use your body language? Indeed, EP can be a confusing and nuanced skill set. In this webinar we will explore:
- A workable definition of EP
- How to identify your current EP
- Creating a plan to grow and develop your EP
- How to use this knowledge in order to be more successful as a leader
Leaders of all levels benefit from a strong Executive Presence; join us to evaluate your own EP and learn ways to sharpen your skills. Register Now

In case you missed it..... Announced in January:
The
NEW
Leader's Edge
- Bringing it all Together
You may have noticed... we are making some BIG changes to this monthly newsletter. Our goal is for this to be one of the most important resources in your leadership tool bag.
New Focused Format
First, you'll notice each month we will be focusing on one of the core competencies in our
MSBCOACH Leadership Maturity Model. That core competency and its related characteristics will be explored in depth by the highlighted Whitepapers, Blogs, and Webinar, giving you a well rounded look at an important leadership concept each month.
New Self-Coaching Program
We are also now offering you a way take your leadership development to the next level with our new program:
The Leadership Climb: A Self Coaching Journey to Leadership Maturity. This
FREE self-coaching program will dive even deeper into that core competency theme and guide you each week to assess, plan, practice and reflect on your own leadership maturity in that area.
Each Sunday evening, we'll be sending you an email as part of this new program. We hope you will take the opportunity to invest time once a week to read, reflect and journal about your leadership journey as we guide you with this engaging, thought provoking, resource filled self-coaching program. However, we understand that you may not be ready for that level of engagement at this time, so can always opt out at the bottom of the email - but still keep receiving our newsletters.
Keep in mind, you can sign up again any time, and we encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues too. We'll also make the previous months available on our website to make it easy for anyone to go back and explore a competency we've already touched on.
