Happy almost Spring to Cuba Township. Yes, we enjoyed the warmer February temps and certainly hope Spring has sprung. We get to start thinking about our spring program while being conscious that some of our most challenging winter weather can pay us a visit in March. Our winter services will conclude this month as we put an end to our Firewood Friday program with the last date set for Friday, March 15.
It's time to visit the polling booth. Make your voice heard during this month’s primary elections on Tuesday, March 19, or vote early at your local early voting location. It's National Women’s History Month in March. For starters, you can celebrate by thanking your mothers for being here. This year’s calendar offers us a rare occasion where our kids are out of school for Spring Break the same week as Easter. We hope you can celebrate here, with family, or at your scheduled Spring Break destination.
Thanks to those of you who took the time to complete our survey and send us your feedback – it is invaluable. We are combing through the responses – which will be made publicly available after our Decennial Committee Meeting in April - and realize that our recycling programs are very popular. Our spring paper and electronics shred event with Paper Tiger is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at the Road District from 8:30 AM to 11:30AM. We look forward to seeing you there.

Cuba Township residents in need may be eligible for various programs, including utility assistance, such as LIHEAP and Nicor Sharing, emergency assistance, and food pantry programs. Please visit our website for a complete list of assistance services.

Passport Services
Passport Applications: Passport processing takes 2-3 weeks for expedited processing and 6-8 weeks for standard processing. Expedited processing is an additional $60 per passport. Passport appointments are required - call 847-381-1924 to schedule an appointment. To check the status of your passport, click here.

Food Pantry
The Tuesday food pantry continues weekly, by appointment only, from 10 AM to 1 PM. If you need food assistance, please email info@cubatwpil.gov or call 847-381-1924.
Below is a list of needed items:
- Toilet Paper and Paper Towels
- 32 oz bottles of liquid laundry detergent
- Canned chicken, salmon, spam, and tuna
- Canned meals including chili (mild), stew, and pork & beans
- Pasta and jars of meat sauce
- Peanut butter
- Soups including vegetable, chicken noodle, and any chunky soups
- Strawberry or cherry jam
- Tomatoes - stewed, or paste
Visit the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Online Portal for Reduced Fare and Ride Free Customers
The RTA'S Fare Programs Online is a web-based online customer portal that allows residents with disabilities and seniors to apply for, replace, and renew Reduced Fare and Ride Free Permits. It's quick and easy to use - go to Fares.RTAChicago.org.
Metra Access Pilot Program
Metra Access is a pilot program running through July 31, 2025 that provides a reduced fare on all Metra lines and zones for individuals enrolled in the SNAP program who live within the RTA six-county region (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties). In order to apply, you will need a SNAP eligibility letter, government-issued ID, and 2" photo of yourself. You may apply at Fares.RTAChicago.org.
Barrington PACE Service
The Pace program is subsidized by Cuba and Barrington Townships, as well as the Villages of Barrington, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, and Tower Lakes.
The service is available to seniors and disabled persons, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. The fares are $2.00 each way. Advanced reservations are required and may be made by calling 1-800-451-4599, Monday - Friday, from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Ride Lake County - PACE Service
Seniors aged 60+ and people with disabilities interested in using Ride Lake County are encouraged to register by calling the Pace Call Center at 1-800-201-6446.
Registering early for Ride Lake County will allow riders to schedule trips. Seniors must provide their date of birth at registration, and individuals with disabilities must provide their RTA Reduced Fare Permit number at registration. Learn more

Lake County Primary Election Set for March 19, 2024
If you need to register, here are your options:
Register online until March 3, 2024, at the State Board of Elections’ Illinois Online Voter Registration Application Website. Proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or State Identification Card is required.
Register at any Illinois Secretary of State Driver’s Service Facility, when you are there for other services, until March 3, 2024.
Grace Period Registration Options:

At Early Voting locations beginning March 4 to March 16. In Cuba Township, the Lake Barrington Village Hall, 23860 N Barrington Rd, in Lake Barrington, serves as an early voting location during the following dates and times: Monday through Friday 9 AM - 5 PM and Saturday, 9 AM - 2 PM. For other early voting locations, click here.
- On Election Day, you may register at your assigned neighborhood voting site serving your address or the Lake County Main Courthouse Lobby. You must vote at the time of registration.
Registration requirements:
You must:
- be a U.S. citizen,
- be a resident of your precinct for 30 days before Election Day,
- be 18 years old on or before Nov 5, 2024, AND
-
provide two forms of valid identification. Both pieces of identification must show your current name, and one must show your current Lake County physical street address.
- You must not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction.
- You may not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

If you do not have access to a computer, you may download the vote-by-mail application here, complete and sign the document, and then mail it in. The Lake County Clerk's Office Must Receive Your Completed Ballot Application by 5 PM March 14.
- Your mailed ballot must be postmarked no later than March 19, or deposited into one of the Lake County drop boxes or hand-delivered to the County Clerk’s Office by 7 PM on Election Day. For your convenience, Lake County has drop boxes at early voting sites. You may drop your ballot at a lockbox located at the Lake Barrington Village Hall, from March 4 - March 16, Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5 PM, or Saturday 9 AM - 2 PM.

Dear Neighbors,
Happy Birthday to Residents Turning 65 in 2024!
If you or your spouse turn 65 at any time in 2024, you are eligible for the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption. The exemption decreases the taxable assessed value by $8,000. Like all exemptions, the property must be your primary residence. There is no income requirement and no annual renewal.
Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption (SCAFHE)
Homeowners 65 or older with an income of $65,000 or less may qualify for the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze. Beginning January 2022, proof of income must be filed along with Senior Freeze applications. You must own the property as your principal residence for two consecutive years (January 1). The Lake County Assessor's Office is mailing the Senior Freeze letters in the coming days.
Filing for exemptions is quick and easy through Lake County's Smartfile E-Filing Portal. If you cannot file online, contact our office at info@cubaassessoril.gov or 847-381-1120 to schedule an appointment.
If you purchased your home last year, remember to file for your 2024 exemptions beginning this month! If you need assistance, schedule an appointment by calling 847-381-1120. Below is a list of the most common exemptions. Visit our Tax Relief page for more information.
General Homestead Exemption (GHE)
If you purchased a residence in Cuba Township in 2023 and it is your primary residence, you may be eligible for the General Homestead Exemption (GHE). The GHE for 2024 is $8,000.
Homestead Exemption for Persons with Disabilities (HEPD)
This exemption may be claimed in addition to the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Homestead Exemption, if applicable. Applicants must be disabled under the Federal Social Security Act and supply evidence of disability, in addition to completing the PTAX-343 Application for Homestead Exemption for Persons with Disabilities and PTAX-343-A Physician's Statement.
Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities
You may claim this exemption in addition to the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Homestead Exemption. Disabled veterans qualify if they have at least 30% and up to 100% service-connected disability. Evidence of disability is required along with the completed PTAX-342 Application for Homestead Exemption and PTAX-342-A Annual Verification of Eligibility.

Firewood Fridays
March dates are March 1, and March 15. The next season begins November 2024. Pick-up begins at 7:30 AM and ends at 2:30 PM or sooner if supply runs out. Firewood pick-up is subject to cancellation due to weather conditions. If you are not registered, contact Sue at 847-381-7793 and register your name and address.
Snow Plow Action Items & Safety Protocols
- Remove cars from the street and cul-de-sacs during a snow event
- If it snows on garbage day, DO NOT put the totes in the street - leave them at the end of the driveway.
- Don't crowd the plow
- Stay at least four car lengths back from a snowplow, and never pass a plow
- Drive slower, brake sooner
- Stay off electronic devices
- Stay off the roads during severe snow events, if possible
The Cuba Township Road District operates 24/7 during inclement weather. You can call us if the matter concerns falling trees blocking roads. Please get in touch with your utility company for power outages.
Spring Brush Pick-Up Set for the Week of April 1, 2024
Cuba Township Road District's Spring Brush Pick-Up is set for the week of April 1, 2024. Please have your neatly stacked pile of brush placed by the street no later than 7 AM on Monday, April 1. ONLY residents who call or email their address prior to April 1 will be picked up. Spread the word to your neighbors! Call Sue at 847-381-7793 or email her at info@cubaroads.org. This will be the only pick-up until the fall (unless a major storm comes through the area and a special pick-up is announced). See guidelines below.
- Brush piles cannot exceed 10'x4' with limbs no larger than 8" in diameter.
- Brush must be placed at the end of the driveway by 7 AM on April 1, 2024.
Cuba Township Paper/Electronics Shred Event Set for Saturday, April 13, 2024, 8:30 - 11:30 AM Cuba Township Road District (blue farmhouse)
- Place papers in paper bags or paper boxes - no clips, binders, batteries, or plastic bags.
- Bound paper material must be taken apart to a size no greater than 2".
- Paper shredding will be done on-site.

Electronic shredding will be done at an offsite location. No refrigerators, blenders, hair dryers accepted. Click here for a list of accepted items.
- Please note: The event is limited to Cuba Township residents. When the Paper and Electronic Tiger trucks are full, the shred event will end. Try to arrive early!
Driveway Alert for Unincorporated Homeowners
If you are a homeowner in unincorporated Lake County and planning to put in a new driveway over an existing culvert, please contact the Cuba Township Road District to inspect the culvert.
Instruction for Trees or Limbs Touching Utility Lines or power outages
If you have issues with trees or limbs touching utility lines, contact the utility company directly. The Township cannot trim trees or limbs within 10 feet of utility lines.
If trees are blocking the road, dial 911.

Did you know clothing is now the fastest growing waste in the US waste stream today? Join us in dropping off used clothing, linens, and shoes at the Cuba Township Textile, and Reuse-A-Shoe drop-off locations in partnership with SWALCO.
Clothing, textile, and shoe recycling is a full-circle program, diverting your new and gently used donations from landfills.

Shoes
Dress boots, hiking boots, and rain boots are accepted. NO WINTER BOOTS ALLOWED. Shoes in any condition, from new or gently used, to those that are worn, will be accepted. And, the great news is that 95% or more of all the materials collected will be recycled or reused.
Before dropping off your shoes, please tie the laces of each pair together; if they are sandals or have no laces, please place a rubber band on the pair to keep the shoes together.
UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS include Roller Blades, Ice Skates, and Winter Boots.

SWALCO Household Chemical Waste Begins March
SWALCO’s HCW collection program diverts HCW from the municipal waste stream by sending it to IEPA-approved recycling and reuse facilities thereby reducing the volume and toxicity of our municipal waste stream. Our HCW program is a hybrid program consisting of year-round public drop-off events (at our Gurnee facility) and mobile collection events (various locations throughout Lake County). This hybrid program is the first of its kind in the State of Illinois providing residents increased accessibility and year-round “disposal” opportunities. BUSINESS/COMMERCIAL WASTE will not be accepted. NO LATEX PAINT!

Secretary of State Implements Skip-the-Line Program

In an effort to improve customer service and eliminate the unpredictability of wait times at Illinois DMVs, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias implemented a Skip-the-Line program.
- Required appointments will reduce wait times.
- Extended hours offer more availability.

ILSOS.gov offers a variety of services that do not require an in-person visit to a facility or office.
The Skip-the-Line Program includes:
Appointment scheduling — Customers will be required to make appointments for in-person visits at 44 of the busiest DMVs. All Chicago and suburban locations and select central and downstate DMVs will require an appointment for REAL IDs, driver’s licenses and ID card services, and in-car driving tests.
Vehicle-related services – such as titles, registrations or license plate renewals – do not require an appointment.

New extended hours of operation — Every DMV will extend hours of operation beginning September 1. Select facilities will be open six days a week – Monday through Saturday.
All DMVs will have hours of operation from Mon-Fri, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
16 DMVs will be open on Saturday, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Simplified online services — Customers are encouraged to visit ilsos.gov to take advantage of many online services, including renewals of driver’s licenses, ID cards and plate stickers.

Homebound and need a State ID? | |

The Homebound State ID program is a service program for older adults, bedridden individuals and people with disabilities who are unable to leave their homes to obtain a state ID card from a Secretary of State facility. The card may be used for identification purposes in the same way as a standard driver’s license is used for identification.
Certain documents are required to obtain the card. Once an applicant submits the information via our web form below, we will determine eligibility and the documents required to complete the transaction. For assistance to help determine if you or your loved one qualifies for this service, call 312-814-3121.

The Illinois Tollway is transitioning to I-PASS Sticker Tags.
“Sticker tags are being adopted by toll agencies across the country and by the Illinois Tollway as they provide a convenient and reliable and travel experience for our customers.”
I-PASS Sticker Tags can be picked up at Illinois Tollway Customer Service Centers starting January 26 and will be available beginning in early February through online orders via the Illinois Tollway website or at a Jewel-Osco or RoadRanger retail location.
The introduction of I-PASS Sticker Tags is being done in collaboration with other E-ZPass agencies and will ensure that customers have continuity in service wherever they travel in the 19 states that are part of the E-ZPass consortium.
Existing I-PASS transponders will continue to work on the Tollway and E-ZPass partners’ facilities including the Chicago Skyway.
Customers will not be required to switch to the I-PASS Sticker Tag as long as they have a working transponder. As I-PASS transponders reach their expiration dates, the Illinois Tollway will send customers new I-PASS Sticker Tags as replacements.
There is no deposit fee for I-PASS Sticker Tags. For customers with current transponders, the $10 transponder deposit will be transferred into their pre-paid toll accounts once a new I-PASS Sticker Tag is registered to the account.
Customers will be asked to dispose of old I-PASS transponders in an environmentally sound way, either by returning them to the Illinois Tollway or by going to the Earth911 website where they can search by "lithium-ion batteries" and enter their zip code to find many convenient recycling locations.
I-PASS Sticker Tags are required to be mounted to a vehicle’s windshield near the rearview mirror, and like license plate or city stickers, they are not designed to be moved between vehicles. There is no battery, and they last until removed from the vehicle.

The Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) promotes the welfare of honorably discharged veterans of military service and their families. The VAC acts as a central service office for all veteran organizations and has general oversight of the distribution of emergency assistance to military veterans and their families.
Types of Assistance
- Assistance with rental and mortgage payments.
- Utility payment assistance.
- Emergency medical care is provided to any member of the Veteran’s
- immediate family who qualifies. Medical care includes hospital payments,
- outpatient care provided by Lake County clinics, and emergency dental, and vision
- care.
- Job service assistance.
- Food, clothing, and other supplies at Midwest Veterans Closet.
- Proper burial for indigent veterans.

Home Depot offers recycling of batteries at their Call2Recylce site located at the Home Depot, 670 S Rand Rd in Lake Zurich.

REAL ID goes into effect on May 7, 2025 | |

For Illinois residents who fly domestically, the federal government extended the deadline to May 7, 2025, which requires you to use a valid US Passport or obtain a REAL ID from the Illinois Secretary of State's Office. Take time to know your options. For information on other types of identification accepted by TSA, Please visit the TSA website.
