We were deeply saddened and heartbroken to hear about Marin Lacson’s passing. Marin was part of the Cuba Township “extended family” where her mom, Bridget, was our Food Pantry Coordinator for nearly three years. We were blessed to meet Marin as a food pantry volunteer and we ask the community to join us in keeping Bridget, her husband Mike, and her son, Nick in our prayers.
The recent winter storms didn’t stand a chance against our reliable Cuba Township Road District team. The Cuba-managed roads were as safe and easy to travel as possible despite the subzero temperatures. We are grateful to TJ Podgorski and his entire team, especially when they work around the clock so we can get around safely.
We are entering our budget and financial planning preparation for our next fiscal year which begins on March 1, 2024. We set separate budgets for our General Township as well as our Road District and will complete the process over the next two Board meetings. We are not anticipating significant budget deviations year over year, but we will be highlighting our key budgetary commitments throughout the year to keep you informed.
We work daily to provide you with quality services while holding the line on taxes. Your opinions matter to us. Please take a moment to fill out the surveys [links are below], and let us know your level of satisfaction, and how we can improve. This will provide us with good feedback as we prepare future budgets.

February is Black History Month. I always enjoy studying impactful people and this month I took the opportunity to learn more about Ida B. Wells. Ms. Wells was a gutsy and savvy journalist who used the power of her pen to inform the public about the real progress African Americans were making after the Civil War. She was born into slavery in Mississippi and settled in Chicago late in the nineteenth century. A good video may be viewed on the WTTW YouTube page here.

Dear Neighbors,
Happy Birthday to Residents Turning 65 in 2024!
If you or your spouse turn 65 at any time in 2024, you are eligible for the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption. The exemption decreases the taxable assessed value by $8,000. Like all exemptions, the property must be your primary residence. There is no income requirement and no annual renewal.
Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption (SCAFHE)
Homeowners 65 or older with an income of $65,000 or less may qualify for the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze. Beginning January 2022, proof of income must be filed along with Senior Freeze applications. You must own the property as your principal residence for two consecutive years (January 1).
Filing for exemptions is quick and easy through Lake County's Smartfile E-Filing Portal. If you cannot file online, contact our office at info@cubaassessoril.gov or 847-381-1120 to schedule an appointment.
If you purchased your home last year, remember to file for your 2024 exemptions beginning this month! If you need assistance, schedule an appointment by calling 847-381-1120. Below is a list of the most common exemptions. Visit our Tax Relief page for more information.
General Homestead Exemption (GHE)
If you purchased a residence in Cuba Township in 2023 and it is your primary residence, you may be eligible for the General Homestead Exemption (GHE). The GHE for 2024 is $8,000.
Homestead Exemption for Persons with Disabilities (HEPD)
This exemption may be claimed in addition to the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Homestead Exemption, if applicable. Applicants must be disabled under the Federal Social Security Act and supply evidence of disability, in addition to completing the PTAX-343 Application for Homestead Exemption for Persons with Disabilities and PTAX-343-A Physician's Statement.
Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities
You may claim this exemption in addition to the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Homestead Exemption. Disabled veterans qualify if they have at least 30% and up to 100% service-connected disability. Evidence of disability is required along with the completed PTAX-342 Application for Homestead Exemption and PTAX-342-A Annual Verification of Eligibility.
Again, filing for exemptions is quick and easy through Lake County's Smartfile E-Filing Portal. If you cannot file online, contact our office at info@cubaassessoril.gov or 847-381-1120 to schedule an appointment.
We are here to serve you!
