"Mothering God, you gave me birth in the bright morning of this world.
Creator, source of every breath, you are my rain, my wind, my sun.” ELW #736
“God is NOT MY mother!” I can still see her red, angry face, steam coming out of both ears. We were singing “Mothering God, You Gave me Birth” at another church, and a congregant was having a hard time with it. “This song is not about God’s gender,” I said softly. “It’s about characteristics of God that we often associate with mothers – giving birth, nurturing, feeding, loving unconditionally, gentleness, patience, etc. The song is actually Trinitarian: Verse 1 is about God, verse 2 about the Christ, verse 3 about the Holy Spirit.” That seemed to calm her down, but I’m not sure she ever warmed up to this song.
I love this story! Not so much in the moment, but with 20/20 hindsight, and because in the words of Karen Walker, “It’s funny because it’s true.” It reminds me that jumping to conclusions is lousy exercise. Seriously though, I like this song because we have so many “Father God” hymns, that recalling God’s mothering characteristics broadens my understanding of love, of who and what God is, and what and who God calls me to be. It is also our Hymn of the Day on Sunday.

. I can hear Sara Doerfler, Cindy Steinert or Claudette Weber playing the flute part. I don’t know who the choir is, but the arranger is a friend of mine from 20 years ago.
If Crown of Glory didn’t already know this hymn, Chancel Choir would sing this setting to help us learn it. However, we do, and we sing it really well! So, listen to the link to remind yourself of the hymn, then sing along to the livestream on Sunday. My experience tells me that God uses music and poetry to broaden my understanding of the world. In the gospel this week Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” How can we live into this good news that feels like a command to put on a happy face to just grin and bear it? I don’t like being sheltered in place. I miss being with people in worship and service and learning together. My feelings of fear and anger, anxiety and depression, numbness and exhaustion indicate my heart is troubled. I want things to be different than they are so that my heart can stop troubling as it does. Maybe you can relate to wanting things to be different and longing for inner peace and social connection.
Hard times are not new to human history. In the midst of them it can feel endless and hopeless. The Psalms cry out to God in pain and anger and bear witness to life on the other side of suffering. Read Psalm 22 and 23 together. Listen for the suffering that matches your experience, know that you are not alone, and feel the shift toward trust in God. If you need an more extroverted or personal connection, there are folks among us who have come through hard times and have wisdom and faith to share. Talk with someone you know who has gone through a hard time to find out what got them through. Pick up the phone. Talk with a neighbor. Read the Psalms. Turn up the music and dance in your driveway. Contact your elected leaders about what you care about. Connect with the people and causes you care about. In Matthew 18:20 Jesus promised to be present where two or more are gathered. Make connections with yourself, with God, and with others. These are ways of living liturgy for our troubled hearts. You may find other ways that help you to practice living into this promise. May God meet you there and give you peace.

Fare For All, Sheridan Story, and Loaves and Fishes are partners who help to eliminate hunger. Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative is our partner to eliminate homelessness for families. EcoFaith Network is comprised of congregations working with the ELCA Minneapolis Area Synod around climate justice issues. Getting connected to what we care about and participating in it can multiply positive effects!
