Music Notes from Tom Paulson

"Didn’t my God deliver Moses from King Pharaoh?
And didn’t He cool the fiery furnace for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego?
When I think of what my God can do,
He delivered Daniel; I know he will deliver you!" (Robert Ray)
This is the second verse of He Never Failed Me Yet, a classic black gospel anthem. I had plans for the Chancel Choir to sing it during the Easter season. It is apparently a Crown favorite; the choir files have about 40 very well-worn copies. I’ve directed it many Sundays for worship over the years. The first time was after the pastor had been on vacation. After we finished, and the congregation stopped clapping cheering, she said, “Wow! I was gone for one week, and I come back to a whole new church.”
I love this song for its sheer energy, joy, and enthusiasm. It is not the most profound song; it is about the level of a Hallmark card. But who doesn’t like getting a greeting card, and who doesn’t smile and feel better after reading it? And is it any less true simply because it isn’t deeply profound?
In these days of Covid-19, and wondering when we can get back together, and how, and concerns for safety especially for those most vulnerable, this song helps me put it in perspective. I may have been through storms before, but God never left me alone and defenseless, God always “abided” with me. I know God will abide with you. Keep the faith!

SPARK Lesson this week is The Ascension. The season of Easter continues with the story of Jesus risen from the dead, walking among and appearing to believers, and ascending into heaven. What it means for believers then and now is that we are all witnesses sent to share God’s good news. We have hope in Jesus when we are sad, worried, or uncertain and we can share our hope with other people!

Get Your Green Thumb Ready
|
Spring has sprung and it’s time to plan CoG’s landscaping projects to help keep the grounds looking good. This year the goal will be to keep projects easy-to-tackle while aligning with social distancing guidelines. Our Adopt-A-Garden program was a great success last year and we are happy to bring that back this year. This allows you and your family to help CoG by maintaining a small planting area or potted plants throughout the growing season. Other project work will focus on weed maintenance and perennial additions around the property—watch for more details soon. If you would like to join this ministry, please email
Kellie
at the church office.

Help Coping for Carver County Residents
|
|
Coping with the changes during the pandemic brings challenges into our lives. Perhaps you feel lonely, sad or anxious due to the uncertainty of the situation. The Stay at Home order, meaning many of us are isolated with family members or alone, can bring challenges as well.
Carver County’s First Street Center, our local community mental health center located in Waconia, offers County residents a free online video support group for those struggling with difficult emotions and thoughts during the COVID-19 crisis. This support group listens and provides caring advice for one other. This isn’t a therapy group where you deal with intense conditions. Rather, this group offers listening, understanding, and ideas on coping with the current pandemic on a day-to-day basis.
Any County resident can participate free of charge, whether you’re a client of First Street Center or not. The group begins on Thursday, May 14 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., continuing every Thursday. You attend the group as needed, with no weekly commitment necessary.
Interested residents should call First Street Center to register at (952)442-4437.
