Growing in Faith Together

In the gospel lesson this week, Matthew 9:35-10:8 [9-23], Jesus proclaims the dominion of heaven in a context that did not resemble any notion of heaven! Jesus has compassion on the crowds and sends the apostles out to experience the power of compassion to heal members of their community and themselves.
Beloved Ones, in your circle of contacts, who does your heart go out to? Jesus tells us to start with the ones we know. How are you being drawn near to a dear one who is in need of compassion to relieve their suffering? Consider this to be the prompting of the Holy Spirit. As a shepherd, how will you guide and provide for their need? It may be a phone call or letter for one who is lonely, or an act of service that you can do that will provide healing, restore hope, lift the spirit of your dear one by connecting with them in some way. Discover the power of compassion and the dominion of heaven within your own realm and reach this week. And the peace of Christ which passes all understanding will guide and keep you.

SUMMER SPARK Lesson is on Romans 5:1-8! We are justified by faith and this gives us hope! What symbols of hope do you see in the world? Christian hope is more than a symbol or optimistic feeling. Christian hope is an orientation, a compass point that guides our way of seeing and acting in the world! We live in hope because of Jesus!

Music Notes from Tom Paulson

|
When I worked at Incarnation Lutheran in Shoreview, the senior pastor, Gary Anderson, was a good mentor and teacher. He had a great deal of respect for the lectionary, the assigned readings for each worship service; that the lectionary represents 2000 years of collected wisdom and lived experience, good and bad. It was his job as a preacher to find that relevant wisdom in the assigned reading. It may take some time, thought, prayer and discussion, but it is almost always there.
This was never more apparent to me than on May 31, Pentecost Sunday as we celebrated the gift of the Holy Spirit, and this past Sunday June 7, as we sang Breathe. Take a listen:

In scripture the Holy Spirit is often described as air, breath of God, wind, life-force, a rush of mighty wind.
Two weeks ago, George Floyd was murdered. Among his last words were, “I can’t breathe.” No one can deny that his death has truly captured our country and our world, and with particularly good reason. His death cannot be undone, but we can become a better people because of it.
It gives me hope to see and hear that the protestors have been incredibly diverse – black, white, old, young, middle-aged, experienced, first-timers, male, female, etc. It gives me hope that the peaceful protests continue, and that Americans seem to be able to see the difference between protests and riots. It is my hope and prayer that the Holy Spirit breathe on all of us, and in the words of the song, “speak the word that heals this broken ground.”
Peace to you, your family and all your loved ones. In this unique time, God is still love, and God is still good.
