Masks For Music Ministry Fundraiser |
We are selling homemade cloth masks to raise funds to purchase outdoor sound equipment to help improve our sound quality during worship services.
Need a new mask during this pandemic time? Try one of ours, carefully made by our Faith Knotters! Each mask has an elastic band so there are no strings to tie. There are sizes for adults and children with some of your favorite colors and patterns - see examples below! Purchase one for everyone in your family to help support a good cause. Seeking Gardeners: Plant and Flower Transplant Project - Rescheduled for Saturday, August 15 |
It has come to our attention that the rain run off near the back patio garden needs to be diverted away from the base of the building. After some investigation and carefully planning, we are moving forward with the installation of two French drains in the patio garden.
We are seeking 8 or more gardeners and plant caregivers to join us for a transplant day on Saturday, August 15 starting at 9:00 a.m. If you are available to come and help dig up the existing plants and transplant them to a temporary location, please contact Kathy Tinker to get signed up. Summertime Matching Challenge: Achieved! |
Thank you to all who contributed to the Summertime Matching Challenge! We have received over $20,000 in gifts to our Sustaining Fund for the month of July! What an incredible response! We want to thank the original donor family for their generosity, as well as everyone who made a special gift to this challenge. Because the summer months are typically the lowest giving time of the year, we give thanks for this stewardship and care of our congregation.

SPARK Sunday School and Connect: Moving Forward |
We at Crown of Glory are beyond grateful for all that Gretchen Pierskalla offered the children and youth of this congregation during her time as Director of Children’s Ministries. We wish her all the best as she takes this next step in her journey of becoming an ordained pastor in the ELCA!
As we move forward into the Fall, we will be entering into a time of discernment for calling someone new to fill the position of Director of Children’s Ministry. At this time, we do not have a specific date for when this position will be filled. Families will be contacted in the future about participating in a round table discussion about this position and what the needs are for the children and youth of Crown of Glory. Be sure to watch for more information about this in the future!
In this interim time, Pastor Reggie will be leading Connect and Pastor Laura will be leading SPARK. All lessons for SPARK, Connect, and Confirmation will be done virtually for the foreseeable future, with additional learning elements included as is needed (take-home bags for SPARK lessons, service projects for Connect and Confirmation, etc.). More information regarding these details will be communicated soon!

Growing in Faith Together |
Sometimes what we see in the world can frighten us. In Matthew 14:22-33, the disciples were afraid when they saw Jesus walking on the water toward them. Peter became afraid as he walked on water toward Jesus. Sometimes what we are capable of can also frighten us, even when it is amazing. (Am really doing THIS? Yikes!) Reminds me of crashing on my bike for the first time as I learned to ride it! Trusting in God’s hand to hold us in life’s storms and challenges is our life’s journey as disciples and followers of Jesus.
In case we did not know it from our own experience, Peter shows us that fear can sink us like a rock. Crying out to God lifts us up. A colleague pointed out that the courage and risk of one person influenced the whole boat of disciples – they all worshiped Jesus as they entered the boat! That raises the stakes, and inspires courage in spite of fear. At its worst, fear can hem us in on all sides can give us ‘no place to be’. Better is a fear that can inform us and raise awareness for caution or safety measures to be considered for taking action.
In this time there is much to cry out to God about! Scripture shows the people of God cried out to God, in whom they trusted to save them. In the Psalms, they cried out to God about their circumstances – about what was broken, unjust, and sinking fast. They cried out to God about who God had been for them, for the ways he had delivered them before and to be gracious and merciful again. With their cries,they lived with active hope as they stepped into their uncertainty to walk with God in newness of life. Because we believe in a God of resurrection and new beginnings, we too cry out and step out into uncertainty. Such is the life of faith.
Give us good courage, Lord, to call out to you, to take your hand and walk with you into the uncertainties we face this day.

Do you know a 4th or 5th grader?
|
It is time to register for Connect! Connect is a pre-confirmation class for 4th and 5th graders. Each week we explore scripture stories and make connections to our daily life around themes that relate to kid’s experiences. We are planning for online learning and onsite in-person learning when possible.
This year’s lessons focus on the Old Testament and we begin with Genesis! We will also explore ways to incorporate service learning and large group social elements with our on line learning and will gather in person when possible, anticipating this will be a year of hybrid learning.
Connect Bibles will be ordered for children new to this program, so they will have their own text to use for Connect and Confirmation studies. Sign up here. Please email Pastor Reggie for more details.
Seeking Guides for Connect!
Connect meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Guides will help facilitate small group discussion by sharing highs and lows, prayer, reading scripture together and discussing how it connects to your life, and end class with a closing prayer and blessing. Guides will facilitate groups online and onsite when possible.

SPARK lesson for this week is about Jesus and Peter walking on water together in Matthew 14:22-33! Kids know about doubt, and how fear can erode confidence at key moments. By demonstrating Jesus’ power over the scary storm, and his care for Peter, this story can help kids face fears. Trusting God’s caring presence can provide comfort and confidence, even in situations that feel unpredictable or risky.

Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!
We’ve been having fun with our games and our songs this summer! I’m going to throw in a little challenge that should be just as fun. There is a special scripture I’d like us to work on memorizing:
“Do not be afraid for I am with you.” Isaiah 43:5
What you can do is get it written out, maybe color the page so it looks cool and put it on your fridge or in your bedroom. Somewhere in your house where you’ll see it a lot. Then, you and your parents can practice it when you’re having lunch, cooking dinner or even at bedtime! With some practice, you can remember the Word of God! Isn’t that neat!

Three Difficult P’s – Perspective, Patience and Perseverance |
Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:28-31)
I love the story of Peter trying to walk on water. It's not so much about defying the laws of physics as it is about not being afraid to try that which is difficult or seemingly impossible. 100 years ago, few people thought the US would ever have a black president, or that we’d be talking into little boxes, with no visible connections, to our friends across the country. Yet here we are.
As a musician, I’ve learned through experience to break difficult music down into manageable chunks, and learn it over time. I’ve led numerous rehearsals where choir members learn music we once thought too difficult or seemingly impossible. When we succeeded, we laughed together and said, “O ye of little faith.”
Experience has also taught me that the biggest obstacle is usually my own and others’ self-doubts. I take great comfort in Jesus’ words, “Why did you doubt?” and in the many times we read in the Bible "Do not be afraid, for I am with you."
We sang this song, Be Still, My Soul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq59iE3MhXM, back in March as the pandemic was just getting started. It comes back to us Sunday August 9, five months later, responding to the gospel reading, and giving us perspective, patience, and perseverance.
