Church News

Interim Pastor News

Pastor Tom Olson, our new interim pastor, will be starting on October 1st. Pastor Tom has 30 years of experience as an ordained pastor and has been at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington for the last 17 years. We think he is a good fit for St. Barnabas and will help lead us through the process of calling a new pastor. If you would like additional information about Pastor Tom, please talk with Colleen Lutz, Jeff Carter, or Pastor Stephanie.

Guest Preacher this Sunday

Our Gift of Love offering this month is Lutheran Campus Ministry.

Pastor Kate Reuer Welton grew up in South Dakota and settled back in Minneapolis after many adventures, including completing a Master of Divinity degree at Harvard Divinity School. Kate was called to serve as Campus Pastor at the University of Minnesota in 2010 and remains excited about proclaiming the Gospel in this lively context and working with student leaders to discern God’s call for our community each year.

Pastor Kate has worked as a community organizer and teacher in a wide range of places including Lutheran Social Service of MN, Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, and Native Arts High School on Lake Street in Minneapolis. Her favorite travel adventures include studying Spanish in Oaxaca and hiking the Annapurna Trail in Nepal with her little brother. Kate is married to Jim, mother to Benjamin and Eleanor, and is an eager gardener in May and June. She enjoys hiking and camping with her family, and the occasional Netflix binge. Her approach to the Christian life? “Awe, wonder, and curiosity.”

Welcome to our New Director of Music Malcolm Burke

Malcolm Burke is a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, pursuing a degree in conducting, with a wind band emphasis, under the tutelage of Dr. Emily Threinen. Burke is the director of the North Star Campus Band. His graduate teaching assistant responsibilities include working with the concert ensembles, athletic bands, conducting courses, and aiding with special events and administrative duties. He recently completed a Master of Arts in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Central Florida. While at Central Florida, Burke worked with concert and chamber ensembles, and athletic bands, and assisted with administrative duties. Before his graduate studies, he served as Director of High School Orchestras for five years at Mason City High School in Mason City, IA. Malcolm's start date is August 15th.

Out of Office

Pastor Stephanie will be on vacation August 12-19. Alexandra George will be

available for emergency pastoral care during that time. If you need Pastor George, please call her at (612) 272-9442.

Karl Smith will be on vacation August 9-12.

Sunday School Teachers

Our children need you! They need adults to model faith for them and to be a friendly face that makes them want to come to church. One way to be a faith role model for children is to be a Sunday School teacher. You don’t need to know all the answers about the Bible; you just need to be willing to guide the kids and learn with them. If you’re interested or have any questions, talk to Pastor Stephanie or Barb Johnson.

Volunteers Make the Church Work!

Our summer Intern Emma has helped us get our social media and our shelves organized, but they’re heading back to school at the end of the summer. Through Emma’s diligent work and the hole left by Pastor Jeff’s departure, we’re discovering areas that could use some volunteer support. If you might be willing to enter worship attendance into a spreadsheet, make posts for us on Facebook or Instagram, or answer phones on days when Brenda is out of the office, please talk to Pastor Stephanie. No previous experience is required, and on-the-job training is offered!

Ministry Fair

Join us between services on September 8th for a Ministry Fair! Learn about the many different ministries we offer, and earn fun prizes. If you lead a small group or ministry team and you would like to display info about your team, talk to the Council member that represents your ministry area. Don’t know who that is? See the glass bulletin board in the Narthex to find out!
