Church News

St. Barnabas will be closed on Monday, September 2nd.

Worship Cantor

We heard you! The Worship and Music Team has heard the request for

additional musical support in worship. We have such a strong and large choir that while singing in worship during the service where the choir is not singing, it can be very quiet. To meet this need, we have contracted a vocalist to serve as cantor at the services that don’t have the choir. Emma Silvestri is a recent St. Olaf graduate and school choir teacher who will be joining us to support

singing in worship beginning on September 15th.

Listening Posts

We are in an important time of change at St. Barnabas. The council will be

holding a series of listening posts here at church in September and we would like all members to sign up for one. These meetings will include a group of 5 to 10 people to answer 8 questions and it will run for 90 minutes. Each group will be talking about the mission and values of St, Barnabas, and how we live those values and what we, as a church, should focus on in the future.

Everyone has the opportunity to take part in the discussion, to give their views, thoughts, and dreams. We will have a facilitator and a note taker, to make sure everyone's thoughts are captured and to help us develop into the church God wants us to be.

You can sign up at the Welcome Center and pick the date and time that works best for you.

Faith Formation Team

The Faith Formation Team is in the process of organizing regular meetings, and invites anyone interested in helping plan educational and fellowship opportunities for children, youth, and their families to join us on Monday, September 9th at 5:30pm in the Fireside Room.

Ministry Fair

Join us between services on September 8th for a Ministry Fair! Learn about the many different ministries we offer, and earn fun prizes. If you lead a small group or ministry team and you would like to display info about your team, talk to the Council member that represents your ministry area. Don’t know who that is? See the glass bulletin board in the Narthex to find out!

Pastor Jeff Update

Brenda Ericson would like to update everyone as to how Pastor Jeff is doing in London. The following is an email from him.

Things have gone well so far. Our dog Oliver made it smoothly through his big adventure (8 hour flight to Paris, 3 hour train ride to Calais, France, and a 40 minute train ride through the EuroTunnel. All papers were good, and he is settling in to his new life in the UK. I think he already has a British sounding bark.

I have a job interview tomorrow at a hospital for a chaplain position. Hopeful, but also aware that I am up against others who have much more hospital

experience than I do. But hopeful. I'll take any prayers you have.

We have a nice 3 bedroom flat (apartment) that has lots of outdoor balcony and green space. The weather is nice here......sort of like Duluth.....breezy and cooler than back home. We ride our bikes everywhere......won't be long and I'll be getting in better shape. It's not uncommon to walk or bike 7-8 miles a day.

Annie is traveling right now to Norway and then to India, so we won't see her for another 8 days. We are working to get the flat settled as we moved some of our house furniture here, but not fitting like we had hoped. I'm liking it here. It's not the US, but it has a pace all its own.

Blessings to you!

Jeff

Respectful Conversations ~ August 27th

We had a beautiful evening at the Minnesota Council of Churches Respectful Conversations meeting new friends, sharing our stories, and learning to listen with empathy.

The St. Barnabas Quilters' Summer Schedule

We have been blessed to receive Marlyce Payne's "stash" after her death; Marlyce was a leader in our group since joining this church. To make room for all that material, half of our previous supplies were donated to Elk River Lutheran Quilters (where Julie Parks worships) and San Pablo Lutheran in South Minneapolis (our mission partner).

Monthly quilting "lessons" occur at San Pablo, as some of their members learn to prepare fabric, use quilting tools, and work on projects for their church and neighborhood.

  • August 23rd - The Elk River Quilters will come here to help sandwich and tie quilts. They plan to arrive about 9:30, and YOU are welcome to help us, too!
  • September 6th - Our completed quilts will be placed in the sanctuary for blessings before they are taken to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse for shipment around the world, Lutheran Social Service in Minnesota for refugees, and North Memorial Hospital for long term patients, hospice, and children. They are available for you to take, leaving at least a $50 donation to help us purchase batting, new backing for strength, and other supplies.
  • September 14th - Quilting day at San Pablo.
  • September 20th & 21st - These are days to work on projects for the JustGifts Market, our local mission project held the first weekend of December each year. All sewers and crafters are welcome to help with projects that we have.

Our quilters gather almost every Friday all year around at 9:30am in the Gardenview Rooms. Sewing is not required, and we need people to sort material colors, tie knots, iron, cut with scissors or rotary cutters, sew around edges to complete quilts, put a quilt packet together. We can find a job for anyone, and all are welcome!

Gift of Love

August "Gift of Love"

Hennepin County Prison Chaplaincy

We are a Christian community by students, for students.

Lutheran Campus Ministry-Twin Cities is rooted in Word and Sacrament, and lifts up the gifts of our ever changing young adult community. LCM-TC welcomes, gathers, equips, and sends students, trusting that through these young adults, the Spirit is active in transforming the campus and the world. Grounded in Christ’s love and mercy, we value hospitality, service, justice, integrity and curiosity.

August Birthdays

Photos of the Week

Lots of grasshoppers hanging out on the foliage around the church this week.

This one looks like it's smiling.

Grasshopper Fun Facts

Grasshoppers have a pair of membranes on their abdomens that vibrate in response to sound waves. These membranes are located under their wings, on either side of the first abdominal segment. Grasshoppers can sense different sound intensities and rhythms, but they can't hear pitch.

Grasshoppers often live in habitats that are similar in color to themselves, which helps them avoid predators.

Grasshoppers are able to jump up to 20 times their body length, which is similar to a human jumping the length of a basketball court in one bound.

Grasshoppers have wings and are strong fliers, which they use to escape predators. Their jumping ability can also help them get into the air.

Grasshoppers can make sounds by rubbing their legs with their wings or by making unique sounds to attract mates.

When picked up, they may spit a brown liquid as a defense mechanism.

Young grasshoppers are called nymphs, and they look like small adults but don't have wings and can't reproduce.
