Church News

Guest Preacher this Sunday

This Sunday we will have a guest preacher, Rev. David Wangaard who serves Global Refuge/Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services as Senior Advisor for Congregational Relations.

Rev. Wangaard was born in Bloomington, MN. After attending St. Olaf College in Northfield, he graduated from Luther Seminary in 1983. It was at Seminary that David met his spouse the Rev. Susan Tjornehoj. They became the first clergy couple to be married and ordained on the same day! Upon ordination, David and Susan served congregations in Northwest Alaska and Northern Minnesota. In 1995, he was called as Senior Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church on Capitol Hill in St. Paul. In 2001, he joined the Bishops staff of the Minneapolis Area Synod where he oversaw urban and multicultural ministries.

In 2012, Susan and David moved to Baltimore, MD where he joined Lutheran World Relief as Senior Advisor for Congregational Relations. Upon retirement in 2021, they moved back to St. Paul to be closer to their daughter. They've been married for 40 years and have a daughter who is a third grade teacher in St. Paul. In his spare time, David enjoys fishing, seeing friends and family, watching sports and spending time at their cabin in Colorado.

In Memoriam

Marlyce Payne

Dear friends in Christ,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Marlyce died on April 9th. She was a member of St. Barnabas for the past 11 1/2 years. Marlyce was very active in many areas of our faith community, including the LWR Quilters, Solo Sisters, Pastor's Class, the Funeral Ministry Team and the Grief Support Group.

There will be a memorial service at 11:00am on April 19th here at St. Barnabas, with a visitation at 10:00am and a meal following the service.

If you would like to send a card to her family, her address is 7316 Niagara Lane N, Maple Grove, MN 55311.

In Romans 14, Paul writes "For none of us lives to ourself, and none of us dies to ourself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's." In good times, and in sorrow, we are held in God’s hands because we are in Lord.

During this time of grief, we place our hope and trust in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection of Christ, and ask you to keep this family in your loving prayers.

Ben Wegner’s Next Adventure

We learned this week that our Director of Music, Ben Wegner, will be attending the University of Indiana this Fall as he begins studies for his PhD. We are very excited for him on this next step of his education. However, we are sad to lose an amazing director and good friend of St. Barnabas. Over these past 2 years, Ben quickly established himself as a talented composer, director, and musician, and has grown our music programs while bringing his own sense of style and humor to our rehearsals. He will be missed dearly! Please watch for more information coming as we prepare to celebrate his ministry in May and as we send him with our blessings on his new venture in Indiana.

Just as we see change and growth in the soil outside, change is imminent here at St. Barnabas, and growth can be sure to come from it.

RIP Medical Debt

Heidi Mandt apologizes for the delay in getting this out in the E-news, but we did receive our fulfillment report a few weeks ago from RIP Medical debt. With the $5,879 given from our church last year, RIP was able to forgive $835,000 in medical debt, wiping clean the debt for over 600 families! This included over a hundred families here in Minnesota. Thank you again for your amazing generosity to this cause. While we do not have a pledge goal moving forward at this time, we hope to continue working with THEEAlliance and RIP in the future!" To view the Medical Debt Fulfillment Report click here.
