The Dalmatian Wine Region of Croatia
| |
|
Dalmatia is one of the four wine regions in Croatia and covers the area from the city of Zadar and its hinterland to the Konavle municipality in the far south.
The southernmost region of Croatia, Dalmatia, is most often recognized as home to Dubrovnik, the iconic UNESCO city whose walls cradle its preserved stone buildings and rows of terraced stairs; a city which evokes an indescribable feeling of wonder that electrifies even the most seasoned world travelers.

The island of Korčula is home to two of Dalmatia's most well known white grapes, Pošip and Grk. | |
Pošip gives high-quality grapes with high yield and, if harvested and vinified properly, results in full-bodied white wine with a good balance of alcohol and acids. It is a natural companion for fish dishes and light-bodied cheeses
In the past, Pošip used to grow only on the island of Korčula, but thanks to its early ripening, today it is spread around Dalmatia – Pelješac peninsula, islands of Brač and Hvar, Pakleni islands, Korlat region, and Biokovo slopes.
| | |
Grk, grown only on the island of Korčula, is a low yielding and highly sought after white grape. Grk produces a delicious, high quality, dry wine that is high in acidity, aromatic and fruity, with hints of pine and saltiness. Grk's flavor profile is reminiscent of other grape varieties, with the warmth sand richness of Chardonnay, the intense aromas of a Sauvignon Blanc and refreshing acidity that reminds us of Riesling.
Grk is called “the most feminine of all the grapes”, but the reason for that is not it’s taste, but rather the fact that the variety has only female functional parts of the plant. Therefore, in order to reproduce successfully, it must be planted with other grape varieties, most often next to Plavac Mali, the most planted red grape variety in Croatia.
| |
Plavac Mali is the basis for many of Croatia's most sought-after red wines. Plavac Mali is known for producing full bodied reds with black cherry flavors and notes of pepper, smoke and spice. Often high in alcohol and tannins, Plavac Mali has excellent aging capabilities.
Most plantings can be found on the Peljesac Peninsula, where the appellations of Postup and Dingac provide the best-known examples of Plavac Mali wines. The grape is also grown on the islands of Hvar and Brač.
