Our beloved Sherlock is injured and needs your help.
Last week while at HPR we noticed something was wrong, as Sherlock always greets me and seeks attention.
He climbs up my legs and begs to be carried in my arms like a baby, "he literally wraps his paws around my neck and hugs me".
He does this daily, but 2 days ago, he just stayed to himself sleeping at the bottom of the cat tree. I thought it was just because of the cold weather as he has a little of arthritis on his back legs, but after a while he got up to go to the food bowl and I notice that his back legs were weak and his back was arched, like he was walking hunched over.
He was rushed to our vet X-rays were done, that only reveled and old fracture and a bb gun pellet on his left leg, all old injuries probably from years back since he use to be an outdoor cat living in a trailer park where we initially got him from.
He has been with us @ HPR since 2008 and ever since he has been and indoor ONLY cat.
In addition to x-rays blood work, a urinalysis was done and his heart was checked and all is very normal.
He was put on cage rest and pain medications, and vet said to wait and see how he responds to pain management in a few days.
I have a friend that is an acupuncturist that I have seen her work miracles with pets, so I asked if she could see Sherlock.
She agreed right away so we went to pay her a visit.
He was a little better after the session, but yesterday he took a turn for the worse.
So he was rushed to see the neurologist and our internal medicine vet at Lauderdale Veterinary Specialist which are nothing but the best.
After both doctors examined, evaluated and took into account the prior lab work and x-rays, it was decided once again to take the conservative approach first and put him on prednisolone for a few days to see if he will respond before getting into anything that is big deal for Sherlock and expensive for us, but CT Scan and surgery was discussed.
So we came back "home".
Sadly as of a few hours later, I check on him and noticed that he
was rapidly loosing all mobility in his hind legs.
I am going back to Lauderdale again today, the next step now is going for what we been trying to avoid, which is doing a CT Scan to look for things such as pinched nerve or slipped disk, etc.
If either is found then surgery is a must.
His bill for the other day at our primary vet was $ 681.00.
The CT scan will be approx. $ 2, 000.00 and then he may need surgery, that will be at least another $ 3 or 4 K (these prices were discused witht he doctor) and I have a feeling that this is were we are going to end up, because it all points out to much more serious than just bruising or superficial injury of the spine.
With spinal injuries the more time it passs the worse it can get, so at this point we need to move to bigger things and bigger diagnostics unfortunately.
We do not have this kind of funding, but I will be darned to put an animal down if prognosis is good and if it is fixable.
Therefore I am begging for your help to fix this magnificent cat and I mean the "magnificent" because is just that, so well behave, incredibly sweet and a very good medical patient.
I am heading to get the CT scan now, I will post an update as soon as I am able to.
The specialty clinic doesn't take donations over the telephone so donating directly to the vet isn't possible. I apologize for that but is out of our control.
