Tipsters help police solve

five recent murder cases

May 6, 2024, 8 a.m. 

Memphis Police officers respond to a shooting report and locate a man on the ground at 2999 Filmore, Cherokee Park, in the Orange Mound neighborhood. The man is dead. Police retrieve a video showing a female running from the area after the shooting occurred. The video is released to the public.

May 7, 2024. 

CrimeStoppers receives an anonymous tip identifying suspect Kenyatta Hayes. The tip is sent to detectives and Hayes is questioned and soon explains she met the victim at a gas station where she agreed to perform sexual acts for $60 payment. She got into the car and at the park she robbed and shot him. 

Hayes said she spent $47 on a hot wing combo for herself and her boyfriend and had $13 left over. Charge: first degree murder in perpetration of a robbery. Bond: $500,000. Award to the tipster who saw the video and recognized the suspect: $4,000.

That was one of five homicide cases presented to the CrimeStoppers Awards Committee early this month. Two others were tips that identified murder suspects and two provided locations for fugitives in murder cases.

One of those led to the arrest of Vontabious Echols. He had been identified by an earlier tipster as the suspect for first degree murder and attempted first degree murder in an April 19 shooting. His bond was $1 million. Paid to the tipster whose information provided his hideout: $700
