HAPPY MARCH FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DINAH MINOT
We’re excited to officially announce a new OPEN CALL TO ARTISTS! We’re gearing up for our 7th juried art exhibition, Time & Temperature, and all local artists are welcome to participate! Our curatorial team includes volunteer artists, curators, cultural leaders and jurors: Posie Moulton, Sadie Bliss, Maile Buker, CJ Opperthauser, Ebenezer Akakpo and the Creative Portland team. An artist reception for the exhibition will open May 2. Eligibility requirements here. In the meantime, we hope that you will come visit us at 84 Free Street in March & April, especially if you haven’t yet seen our current show, Resilience! We also look forward to seeing you at our next open house coffee hour, Monday Morning Drop By on March 4 at 8:30am.
We have been humbled by the response to Creative Portland’s month of giving in celebration of our 15th Anniversary - and so thankful for you, our incredible community, for supporting our work sustaining Portland’s creative economy. We cannot begin to express the keen motivation we feel, buoyed by this support, to propel our work even further as we turn an eye to the next 15 years. We are looking forward to deeper engagement and wider connection as, together, we nurture the arts in our community.
During these dark and cold winter days and nights, know that you can still find a lot of warmth in downtown Portland. Cheer up - Spring is coming early this year (at least according to the Ground Hog). Find out what’s going on night and day by using the Creative Portland app or by browsing the events on our website. Cold days tend to limit foot traffic, fewer shoppers and cultural visitors, but the good news is that there’s plenty of street parking! This is the time of year to check out the art galleries with plenty of breathing space for a deep dive to discover and buy local art. The Maine Irish Heritage Center is gearing up for festivities to celebrate the Spring, and the St. Patrick’s Day parade will be on Sunday, March 17th. Check out the celebrations and the parade route, beginning at the Fish Pier at noon. All are welcome, especially leprechauns.
Cultural Heritage Week, produced by Cultural Alliance of Maine, is an annual opportunity to celebrate the diversity of art, humanities, performance, storytelling, traditions, historic preservation, and other cultural activities that connect and inspire our communities. Learn more about how you can participate here.
