Happy August from Executive Director Dinah Minot
We honor and sadly bid farewell to our First Friday Art Walk media sponsor, Portland Phoenix. They were a stellar team that assembled in 2019 to bring back the authentic journalism that we all seek in a social media culture of hype. We commend their efforts and quality journalism as they published their last edition on July 24. Sadly, it wasn’t sustainable in today’s advertising competition. It is rare to witness a publication that operates without an ounce of complacence. Thank you Portland Phoenix for wholeheartedly supporting the local arts ecosystem as a vital sector of the creative economy and thank you for publishing our Art Walk Map & Guide each month. We are now looking for a new home!
The Arts Community is brimming with creativity. Congratulations to Running With Scissors for hosting a terrific Print Jam last weekend! The printmaking on giant cloth panels are absolutely spectacular and worthy of the highest community praise. Incredible local talent. Speaking of our amazing artists, printmakers and illustrators, we are also unofficially reaching out here to all photographers and graphic designers! We receive a lot of requests in the summertime, especially while people are on vacation seeking family photos, wedding & party invitations, family portraits, and local musicians for special events.
Check out our FREE artist directory on the Creative Portland website. You don’t have to be a fine art photographer to sign up. All you need is a photo of representative work, your name, and a link to reach your business. Thanks to our developers at Yarn, the free directory offers a sortable & filterable search for artists of diverse artistic disciplines in Greater Portland.
Get engaged in the summer arts and music scene! Have you chosen a play, art exhibition, or performing arts event that you are planning to attend? Browse our website and app (ios users). In this August Monthly Arts Update, you’ll find a special Festival section highlighting local cultural events and happenings.
After a damp and foggy July, the gardens, farmland, and forests have all been well fed by the rain Gods, but now the sun is shining! Get out onto Casco Bay. Portland’s World expands far and wide during the summertime, with daily trips to the nearby islands. It’s a heyday of inspiration for creative expression, art projects, and summer concerts. Not only are the tourists here in town but so are the summer people. The art galleries are bustling with consistent business and the music venues are rocking all summer long. Check out the Encounters immersive art installation at 170 Anderson Street in the East Bayside. Make sure you download the Creative Portland app for one stop browsing and planning. “Favorite” the events you like so that you can receive popup notifications as a reminder on your phone.
