Dueling Pianos: THIS SATURDAY! May 25, 4:30 - 6:30 pm

Join us THIS Saturday for a FUN event for a good cause! We will enjoy a spaghetti dinner while listening to the wonderful music of our own Dr. John Weinel and Johnny Salvesen (Director of Worship & Music at Messiah Lutheran Church).

We will take donations at the event. The money raised is going to support Grace Place in Houston. Their mission is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for vulnerable youth of all sexualities and genders experiencing homelessness, providing nourishment, healthy relationships, and hope for the future. Come join us on Saturday - you won't want to miss this fun event!

New Member Class Continues June 2

For those who have indicated a wish to join Covenant and anyone who is thinking about it or would like to know more about what it means to be an ELCA Lutheran, this is the class for you! Part 2 of this class will be on Sunday, June 2 at 11:15 am (no class on May 26 due to the holiday weekend). If you missed Part 1 this past Sunday, you may still attend on June 2! Current members are invited to attend the class as well, for a refresher on Lutheranism. Let Pastor JT or Sue Tabbert know if you'd like to attend and/or if you are interested in membership at Covenant or sign up at the Welcome Desk. We would love to welcome you to the Covenant family!

Volunteer Needs!

Our Nursery Attendant, Meher, will be out of town on May 26 and June 2. If you can help cover the nursery on either of these Sundays, let Sue Tabbert know. We have one volunteer for each Sunday, but we could use a second person to help as well.

This past Sunday was the last day of regular Christian Education classes for this school year. We will break a break for the summer, and classes will resume on August 18. In anticipation of that, we are looking for teachers for the fall for our Godly Play class (ages 3 through 1st grade). Contact Debbie Winkelmann if you have questions or would like to volunteer!

MESA Summer Food Collection

From now through June 16, we are collecting food items most needed for families during the summer months when schools are out. We are collecting donations of peanut butter and jelly, individually-wrapped snacks, boxed macaroni and cheese, and cereal. Bring your donations to church as usual. Thank you for your care and concern for the hungry in our community!

Message from Pastor

Hello Friends!

This past weekend, several members of Covenant attended the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod Assembly up at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in the Woodlands. The theme of the Assembly was, “Listen, God is Calling.” We heard story after story of different ways that God is calling people to serve and grow the kingdom of heaven right here on earth. From rural ministry, to multi-parish ministry, to food trucks, to outdoor/camping ministry, to campus ministry. There are as many ways to serve God as there are people willing to serve! It was a great reminder to us that everyone who knows God has been given a calling to follow him some way – but it’s only when we listen that we can hear that call.

You might say – “God didn’t call me. I’m not a minister or anything. I’m just a __________.” I would challenge you to consider anything you might put in that blank as your calling. Maybe God called you to be a parent, or a bus driver, or a teacher, or an engineer, or an accountant. Some people call that a role, or a job, or their vocation – but I don’t think we can make clear distinctions between what we do as a job or vocation, and what God has called us to. Scripture says that whatever your hand finds to do – do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10). 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” Martin Luther famously wrote against the idea that only nuns, priests, and monks are “called”. Anything that brings you closer to your neighbor can be your calling. Anything that allows you to show God’s love to your neighbor can be your calling. When you work, if you do it to the best of your ability and for the glory of God, it brings you closer to both God and neighbor. Luther said, “God doesn’t need your good works – but your neighbor does.”

In our scripture readings this Sunday, we have a passage from Isaiah 6 – the Call of Isaiah. Isaiah had a vision in which he saw the throne room of God, and fell on his knees in humility and repentance. Then he heard a voice from the throne asking who would go to God’s people and deliver the message. Isaiah’s response was, “Here am I! Send me!” He wasn’t a prophet before this. But his calling from God drew him closer to his neighbors, and gave his life purpose. His obedience honored God. I hope we can say the same things about our work in the world. I hope it draws us closer to our neighbors, and that it honors God – whatever it happens to be.
