Dennis Rainey, with FamilyLife, says "the influence of your marriage will outlive you". I was reminded this week that this is so very true. What will our children and our children's children know about God, know about love because of our legacy?
Our daughter came home from college for a day visit a couple of Sundays ago and brought her boyfriend. As always, I was very impressed with the way her boyfriend treated her. He pulled out chairs, opened doors, took out the trash, pumped the gas, and quietly and patiently listened to her rant about who at school was getting on her nerves. We are so happy that she has a God-fearing young man with such a gentle, patient spirit. This is what we trained her to seek in a mate and this is what her father and I pray for, for her. When she dated her first boyfriend, at 16 years-old, she dated a guy who was initially very nice and well-mannered, but later became argumentative, critical, and condescending. I overheard an argument and responded by telling her to discontinue the call and explained to her that at her age and in the dating stage there should not be much if any arguing because they didn't share money, nor did they share a living space that it was hard for the two personalities to agree how to live in. I told her that she should be dating someone who wants to laugh and have fun; someone who loves the Lord; someone who would not dare call her a name or criticize her. I reminded her of what she sees at home and that she should expect the same or better. She soon broke off the relationship. The next boyfriend was a kind, gentle, chivalrous soul who she dated until she left for college.

Our son is quite the gentleman, too. While growing up, his father trained him to honor his sister and I by pulling out chairs, opening the door, etc. In addition to this training, we also taught him not to date young ladies who did not appreciate or want to be honored in such a way. I told him that if a lady does not want to be treated well, this may be an indication of other 'issues'. We are proud to say that we will leave a legacy of love and kindness in love relationships.

Proverbs 22:6, tells us to "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it". We teach our children how to tie their shoes, how to drive a car, how to be a good sport, etc. Let's not forget to teach them how to love via words and example. I know some of you are thinking, I don't know how to myself. Well, the legacy you received (what you were taught) is not as important as the legacy you will leave. So, let you children see you trying. Talk to them about your attempts to do better.

The love, the oneness you establish as a couple allows you to impact others, especially your children. Decide today that you are going to do what it takes (i.e. being more patient and kind with your spouse, talking to your children about good and bad choices in friendships and dating relationships) to

leave a legacy of love.

Continued Blessings,
