LoveNote2
The Newmans remind us that the miracle of Christmas means that miracles can happen in our marriages; remind us of key elements to include in our prayers; share a favorite Christmas dinner recipe; spotlight a new love song; share links to financial podcasts; share date night ideas; share information about upcoming couples’ workshops, etc.

Merry Christmas!

As we prepare for the miracle that is Christmas…. the celebration of the miracle birth of baby Jesus…..the miracle that is love….we want to remind you that how you think about Christmas, how you think about your marriage, etc. determines your experience. If you think it’s going to be a great Christmas, its going to be a great Christmas. If you think problem areas in your marriage can get better, they will. Our thoughts are powerful; they inform our beliefs about our marriages, which impacts our behavior…. the way we treat each other.

I recently completed the first level of a four-level training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and was surprised to learn that even though couples and couples’ therapists often want to focus on conflict resolution and communication when couples are experiencing marital problems, the thing that needs to be examined first is the status of their friendship. Friendship is the key factor in long lasting relationships. There are many couples who holler, scream and fight, but outside of their heated arguments, they are best friends, love one another dearly and enjoy one another’s company. Yes, they need to learn to communicate better, but at the end of the day, it’s the quality of their friendship that will sustain them.

So, in 2022, let’s commit to spending more time getting to know and understand our spouses better; work towards eliminating the behavior of looking for each other’s mistakes and correcting them but instead look to see what they are doing right; show our appreciation; and work to create a culture of fondness, affection and respect.

Let's create friendships that looks like sitting close to one another on the sofa, holding hands, kissing, touching each other as you pass one another in the room, showing interest in what happens during each other’s day, sharing funny stories and laughing together, attempting to get back on track when things get off track, and taking a ‘you and I against the world’ stance on a regular basis.

I know that some of you are saying, “It’s going to take a miracle”…… well we have one….Christ was born in Bethlehem and we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!

Merry Christmas and let's make it a Happy New Year!

Praying for Your Marriage
Things to Remember When Praying for Your Marriage:
Prayers that Prevail, reminds us that there is power in prayer; there is power in the Word of God; and when we combine these two sources with the power of the Holy Spirit, explosive spiritual energy is unleashed in our lives, resulting in renewed faith, victory and answered prayer. In Matthew 7:7, Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you”.

Consider using the following keys to get our prayers answered…to get to ‘the miracle’:

1) Pray according to the will of God- And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petition that we desired of him. (1 John 5: 14-15)
2) Pray in the name of Jesus- Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the work that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14: 12-14)
3) Pray in faith, nothing wavering- But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1: 6-8)
4) Pray with persistence- And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground (Luke 22:44); Men ought always pray and not faint (Luke 18: 1); the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5:16); Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
5) Be specific in prayer- Whosoever…..shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith (Mark 11: 23); be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6)
6) Pray with humility- If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14)
7) Pray in the spirit- with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints (Ephesians 6:18); but if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you….ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8: 11-15)
8) Wait on God- But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing (James 1:4); Thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me (Isaiah 49: 23); Blessed are all them that wait for him (Isaiah 30: 18)
9) Offer thanksgiving and praise- Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name (Psalm 100:4)
10) Abide in Christ- Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me….If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you (John 15: 4, 7)

Scripture to Ponder
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no division among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. (1 Corinthians 1: 10)
