Hunterdon County 2021 Veteran’s Recognition Medal Ceremony
Will Be Held Virtually On
Veterans Day November 11th From The Historic Courthouse
Hunterdon County is again hosting its annual Veteran’s Recognition Medal Ceremony virtually over the internet, on Veteran’s Day, November 11th at 2pm, livestreamed from the Historic Courthouse, Commissioner Zachary T. Rich has reported.

Commissioner Rich, the Board’s Veteran’s liaison, said, “The annual ceremony is an honor for the Commissioner Board and Constitutional Officers to participate in and recognizing our county’s Veterans, despite the continuing health concerns, is important. Each Veteran deserves to be acknowledged for their service to the nation and having the ceremony on Veterans Day is appropriate.”

New Jersey Survivors Now Have More Time to Apply for FEMA Assistance

The deadline for New Jersey homeowners and renters to apply for FEMA individual assistance for damage and losses from the remnants of Hurricane Ida has been extended to Dec. 6, 2021, Hunterdon County Commissioner Deputy Director John E. Lanza, the County's Public Safety liaison, has reported.

The extension provides more time for survivors living in counties designated for individual assistance including Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union and Warren.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses, and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

Hunterdon County Health Department Recognizes National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
The Hunterdon County Health Department is recognizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW), October 24-30, 2021. NLPPW is an annual initiative sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to increase awareness of childhood lead poisoning prevention.  Lead poisoning can affect nearly every system in a child’s body, and lead poisoning is completely preventable despite the presence of lead in homes and the environment.

Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren, liaison for the Hunterdon County Health Department, said, “In 2021, Hunterdon County is reporting an increase in children testing positive for elevated blood lead levels or lead poisoning in Hunterdon County.

There is no safe level of lead in a person’s blood. Childhood exposure to lead may not show immediate or obvious symptoms but can affect long-term development and learning. Parents should be aware of possible sources of lead in their homes, prevent children from being exposed to those sources, and have their children tested for lead.”
