ATS Interns Asked Lauren:
  • What inspired you to become an Adventure Camp counselor this year?
"When I found out about Adventure Camp I was excited for the opportunity to learn how to support and work with children with SM. I enjoy playing with children and helping them experience fun and success. Helping children improve life skills has always been a passion of mine."
  • How do you plan on applying what you learn about selective mutism to your career in special education?

" I will bring back to my school all of the wonderful strategies and tools that I have learned to help students with SM be successful throughout their school year. I am eager to share this with fellow teachers that I work with and they are excited to learn more about my experience too."
  • What skills/lessons learned in your career in Special Education do you bring to camp?
"Over the past several years I have learned how to support students within a school environment to build on their academic skills, their social/emotional skills, and their communication skills. Part of my job is to determine the function of students behavior and how to help them improve their behavior/actions through collaboration with the team, structured plans, rewards and praise, and of course guided practice."

  • What inspires you most about helping the kids you work with achieve their goals?
" Seeing the joy and the sense of accomplishment that kids show is everything to me. When I'm working with a child who works hard to complete a task successfully and then they finally do it, it is an amazing feeling for everyone. I want children everywhere to know that they can achieve anything! It's important to build confidence in our children and help them work towards their goals.

  • If you could talk to your camper right now, what would you tell them?
"I can't wait to have so much fun with my camper. I am very excited to learn more about my camper and the things my camper is interested in. I have two kids of my own, I love the outdoors, and I have lots of dogs!
