E-News Blast for May 3rd, 2018

A Message from Jan

I have some good news about Greenbank Road between Hunt Club and Fallowfield.  It's no secret to anyone living in or driving to Barrhaven that this road requires adjustments for safety.  It has a high collision rate and unfortunately as you know the accidents are often very serious and in fact fatal. The Safety Unit in Transportation has set aside about $2 million for the project.  A rumble strip will run down the centre of the road, the shoulders will be paved, the streetlights will be pushed back out of the "throw" zone and more.  Absolutely the road needs to be widened to 4 lanes and that will cost about $24 million but before we can find the money for this part of Greenbank, a few things need to happen.  First, we need to prioritize this road in the Transportation Master Plan.  Like the Official Plan, the TMP will be developed and approved in the next term. We don't need very much land from the NCC to increase our right away. We also need to work with our Federal and Provincial counterparts for matching funding. The proposed construction is in 2019 however, I am pushing for a quicker timeframe...2018...more news on this later.

If you have been to COSTCO and I am sure most have and if not to any of the growing list of new businesses you know that traffic is a real problem.  Coming or going we have problems.  I have met with Ruth Hall the Manager of COSTCO on a few occasions along with Phil Landry our Director of Transportation to walk the site, to look for some traffic breathing room.  I met with Phil at 7 this morning to have a look at some ideas we have.  Hang on to your hats everyone, hoping to have some updates for you in a couple of weeks.  In the meantime, take care and be patient with your fellow road warriors!

Yesterday I heard the good news that tourism in Ottawa was up 8% in 2017 and fully $2Billion was the increase in financial benefit to Ottawa...wow.  The plan is to keep attracting events to keep up the increase in tourists coming to our beautiful City while of course benefitting us who live here with more entertainment options.

I just signed off on the extension of the multi-use pathway on the east side of Woodroffe that will connect the current pathway from Longfields to Farm Boy at Stoneway.  It was years ago I asked staff to find the funding for this addition.  I think a whole lot of families will feel safer about cycling further and walking more with this project.

Community Police

Please find below a link to the latest issue of "Board Matters", the quarterly newsletter of the Ottawa Police Services Board.  A Newsletter from the Ottawa Police Services Board

From the OPS newsletter, the following is noteworthy in regards to cannabis legalization. This is OPS' concerns.
*           The proposed federal Cannabis Act would create rules for producing, processing and selling cannabis across Canada.
*           More time is needed to properly train officers about the new laws and for public education.
*           The biggest concerns facing the OPS are:
o          impaired driving, it will not be not be helped with the addition of another drug;
o          the impact on youth;
o          this will have a negative impact on the community and the way youth think about drugs;
o          ensuring illegal dispensaries, when closed, remain closed; and
o          additional financial costs to the operational budget.
*           While the legislation of recreational pot will lighten the load, staff have indicated that it will bring a multitude of other problems, including an expected rise in complaints about neighbours owning pot plants, suspected grow-ops, and robberies and home invasions.
*           It is estimated that police will need six to eight months from the time all legislation at the provincial and federal level is in place before they will be fully ready to enforce the new laws.

Preliminary Plan of the Dog Park for Cobble Hill

In terms of the dog park that we are proposing for the Cobble Hill Park redevelopment, here are the general dates that we are currently working with:
*           End of year 2018 - work is anticipated to be completed on the decommissioning of the existing storm water pond
*           End of year 2018 - Concept Design on the new park layout will be completed
         - this would include public consultation in the late fall
*           Winter 2019 - construction drawings and tender documents to be prepared
*           Early spring 2019 - tender
*           Summer 2019 - construction

The above tentative schedule is assuming two main things:
1.         that the stormwater pond decommissioning is on schedule and that the park site is at a state that we can build,
2.         that the developer of the neighbouring subdivision has completed what they need to for the park (services, sidewalk)

Barrhaven Snow Disposal Facility
Strandherd at Dealership Drive (Philsar)

Barrhaven Buzzzzzz

  I have received a few comments from residents inquiring about new developments going on in Barrhaven. Below is a list of stores and services we can expect in the coming months.

At the corner of Highbury Park and Greenbank Road, a commercial plaza is under construction. In the first block, there will be an A&W. We expect this will be open and running this summer. In the second block, we have a chocolate and dessert store, a nail salon, a Lebanese pie shop, a dentist, periodontist, and a restaurant. Finally, in the third block, there will be a medical practice, a pharmacy, a physiotherapist, and a yoga studio.  We don't have an opening date for the second and third block just yet.

Many of you have noticed construction going on in the Loblaws parking lot along Strandherd. New stores opening include Chatters, Fiazza, New Look Optical, Tommy Guns, Paramount Fine Foods, Meridian, and Fire House Subs.

We also have two hotels coming to Barrhaven. Given the numerous youth sports teams in our neighborhood, this is long overdue. In the Citigate Business Park, there will be a Towne Place Suites by Marriott. This hotel will have a pool, a gym, and a few small meeting rooms. It will be about 100 units and they vary in size from a studio all the way up to a 2 bedroom; perfect for a family travelling to Barrhaven for a tournament! Another hotel will be built on O'Keefe Court. This will be a Hampton Inn and Suites. This hotel will also have a pool and will have conference rooms for up to 175 people. Both of these hotels are expected to be open by Spring 2019.

At the corner of Strandherd and McGarry Terrace there is a 6 story Dymon Storage proposed with retail uses on the bottom floor.   Just behind the Dymon is an 18 story proposed Lepine development. At the corner of Marketplace and Longfields are two 16-story buildings proposed by St. Joseph Developments.  On the other side of Marketplace is Waterford Town Centre which is a retirement residence - two buildings each with 8 stories.

Claridge has recently contacted our office to let us know that they are going to proceed with their application for a retirement home at the corner of Strandherd and Maravista. They have advised us that they are going to request a minor variance to increase the height of the building by about 1.5 stories. We don't have any further information yet on what the building will look like or when it will be ready but we will keep you updated.
