#Cornerstone40 Spotlights

Cornerstone was founded in 1983 by a group of dedicated volunteers who recognized the need for domestic violence services in the Hennepin County suburbs. This was a time before significant public funding for domestic violence services and a time when this issue was rarely even discussed. Since these forward-thinking and caring volunteers started Cornerstone, we have expanded in size, scope and geographic footprint.

Our 40th anniversary is a chance to honor those who made this growth possible: volunteers, donors, board members, staff and the community. It is also an opportunity to reflect back on the strength and accomplishments of our agency and those we serve. This month, we highlight Cornerstone’s statewide Day One® program.

Day One®: Minnesota's Call to Safety

Day One®, a statewide program network of over 90 Minnesota domestic violence, sexual violence, anti-trafficking, youth advocacy and general crime agencies, became part of Cornerstone in 2005. Day One ensures victims across the state can get connected to safety and services with just one call, text, email or online chat.

The program’s call center hosts the Minnesota Day One Crisis Line and the Minnesota Crime Victim Support Line with 24/7 telephonic interpreter services, operating a secure online database that provides real-time information regarding available bed space and services among network members. Day One is the recognized first point of contact for Minnesota’s No Wrong Door/Safe Harbors Law, ensuring sexually exploited youth have access to support, safety and shelter.

Day One also partners with ThinkSelf to better equip domestic violence and sexual violence organizations across the state to serve Deaf and hard of hearing survivors. Day One’s Minnesota Alliance for Family & Animal Safety (MNAFAS) program provides safe temporary foster care for the pets of families and individuals experiencing violence.

Pictured above: Day One recently celebrated Minneapolis's Pride Event on June 24-25, 2023, with Cornerstone staff, volunteers, and network partners hosting a tent and connecting with community members.

In just 2022 alone, Day One Call Center responded to 33,033 calls, texts and chat messages from people seeking safety, resources, and support. Clearly, Day One is a pivotal program for making Minnesota a safer place to live, and it is a program revered across the country.

New Report: An Institutional Analysis of the Minneapolis Police Response to Domestic Violence

A new report capturing the voices of Minneapolis domestic violence survivors demonstrates that calling the local police doesn’t always keep them safer. The report, An Institutional Analysis of the Minneapolis Police Response to Domestic Violence, and a Project Brief has been released by advocacy group Global Rights for Women in collaboration with members of the Domestic Violence Working Group, including Cornerstone.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Our greatest needs right now are $25 - $50 gift cards that allow us to quickly address the immediate needs of victims/survivors. Gift cards to Target and Walmart allow us to help families as needs arise for things like food, clothing and shoes, while Visa gift cards provide us even more flexibility to assist with things that can’t be found at big box stores, like gas and bus tokens.

Other items needed this month include anything currently listed on our Amazon Wishlist which we update regularly to reflect our programs' and participants' needs.

Donations may be dropped off at our Bloomington location Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Please email courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org once you’ve dropped off a donation so that we may record your gift and properly thank you.

School Supply Drives

We don't want to rush through summer, but the new school year will be here before we know it! If you or your organization is interested in coordinating a school supply drive, please contact courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Tuesday Night Community Meals

We are looking for volunteer groups to host Tuesday night community meals for Cornerstone participants on July 25 and August 22. If you and/or your faith group, business, civic organization, or neighborhood group is interested in helping out or have questions, please contact courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

Volunteer groups will shop and prepare a meal for 15-25 people, serve the meal to Cornerstone families and then clean up. Groups are here from 4:30pm to 7:00pm including set up and cleaning. Group size is usually 5-7 volunteers.

Childcare Assistance

Cornerstone is looking for volunteers to assist with childcare while our participants attend meetings, go to appointments or run errands. Shifts are weekly on Mondays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Brooklyn Center Farmers Market

Cornerstone will have a resource table at the Brooklyn Center Farmers Market on July 6th, August 24th, and September 28th, and we are looking for volunteers to help share information about our services.

Marketing Experience

In addition, we are looking for volunteers with marketing experience to help get the word out about Cornerstone's services for sexually exploited youth.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to volunteer for any of these opportunities, please contact Courtney at courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS!

A huge thank you to Entrust for dropping off their Employee Drive donations with an amazing amount of our needed items, including diapers, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and more, as well as 10 STEM backpacks!

Cornerstone was fortunate to have a great group of volunteers from the Courtyard by Marriott Edina Bloomington (pictured below) provide a community meal to share with our families in late June. The pasta, salad, and garlic bread were a big hit!

Thank you to The Frank Hadley and Cornelia Root Ginn Foundation of the Cleveland Foundation for their 2023 grant award to support Cornerstone’s School-Based Services (SBS) Program.

We are grateful for our long-term partner, Xcel Energy, for their 2023 grant to support Cornerstone’s Community and Economic Empowerment Services (CEES) Program. This is a wonderful investment in services designed to promote long-term safety and stability for survivors.

And thank you to Two Men and a Truck for supporting Cornerstone's participants as part of the 2023 Movers for Moms program. We were so grateful to receive so many wonderful donations, including hair products.
