The small village of Cookely, near Kidderminster, in the rolling Worcestershire countryside isn't necessarily where you would expect to find a leading manufacturer, but this is exactly where leading OTR wheel supplier to the yellow goods market, Titan Steel Wheels, is based. The subsidiary of Titan International distributes its niche products mainly into Europe, meeting the specifications of end-users in the construction, industrial, mining and agricultural sectors with a wide variety of part numbers, largely comprising three- and five-piece wheels. Tyres & Accessories visited the facility, where Titan Europe managing director, wheels division, Chris Akers talked us through the history of the site, Titan's current activities and future plans.

Titan Steel Wheels site's long manufacturing history
The site of the Titan Wheels factory in Cookley, near Kidderminster does not have the look of a major manufacturing venture; stretching out down the hill from the main office block on the main road through the village, however, this piece of land has housed industry since 1650, making it, MD Chris Akers tells T&A, "one of the oldest manufacturing sites in the UK for continuous manufacturing."

Pirelli will bring its three softest P Zero F1 compounds - soft, supersoft and ultrasoft - to the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, describing the track as "probably the closest that Formula One comes to a rally stage." Big changes of elevation and a sequence of fast and twisty corners coalesce with unpredictable weather and the grand prix's roots in the 1969 Osterreichring, which gives the track quite an old-school character.

The largest, most important tyre industry trade show in the world reached the end of an era with its 2016 edition. Tyres & Accessories exhibited alongside the biggest manufacturers in Hall 3, and will report the biggest news from the last Essen tyre show, as well as examine what lies ahead for the industry's biggest event.

Industrial and specialist tyres
With global economies remaining sluggish on low confidence, the construction, mining and related industries are broadly rather flat at the moment. Yet difficult market conditions can often be the father of innovation to tyre makers, as end-users seek competetive advantages out of ongoing business costs. Tyres & Accessories examines these markets in the July edition.

Raw materials and machinery
What you get out of a tyre depends on what you put into it, and given that at least a couple of hundred separate ingredients go into producing a tyre, manufacturers are highly dependent upon their suppliers and the materials they provide - and that's before the tyre making process even begins! The July issue of Tyres & Accessories takes a look at some of the many protagonists who contribute towards the black, round end product we know and love. Don't miss next month's Raw materials and machinery feature.

Processing tyres after they have completed their first life is never going to be a glamorous job. Yet increasing the professionalism of companies engaged in this important sector is vital for several reasons. Fires, fly tipping and illegal storage all have the ability to bring down the reputation of the tyre business in the public perception, and finding the best and most equitable business arrangements to reduce their occurrences is a priority. More broadly, the industry must continue to innovate in the recovery of materials and energy from end of life tyres for economic and ecological reasons alike. The Tyre Recovery Association's Recycling Day 2016 also included another development that may surprise some. For more, see the July issue.
