Save the Date – Save Your Stuff!

The Peach Festival is coming Saturday, August 24. A pancake breakfast will be on Sunday, July 28 (a great time to bring your used books and flea market items). Please start gathering up your donations now so you can drop them off at the church on 7/28 or sometime during the following week (summer hours are 9 am -1 pm, please call to confirm if you need to drop outside of these hours). Flea market and book sales will begin Sunday, August 4.

In addition to books and flea market items, please consider plants and silent auction items. We brought back the plant sale last year with hopes of making it even more successful this year, we ask if you could start saving cuttings and bulbs to be dropped off on 8/24. Ideas for the silent auction are: your excess frequent flier miles, a weekend at your vacation home, or nice photos & art items. If you have something you think is too nice for the flea market, consider donating it to the silent auction.

Lay Leader Insights:

Empathy & Compassion

I recently heard a wonderful Commencement Speech by Gov Pritzker of Illinois to the Northwestern University Class of 2023.

"When we see someone who doesn’t look like us or sound like us like us or love like us or live like us, the first thought that crosses almost everyone's brain is either fear or judgment, or both. That's evolution. We survived as a species by being suspicious of things that we aren’t familiar with. In order to be kind we have to shut down that animal instinct and force our brain to travel a different pathway. Empathy and compassion are evolved states of being. They require the mental capacity to step past our most primal urges. People who are kind have the type of thinking and problem-solving skills to survive. They have forged new mental pathways to overcome their own instinctual fears."

July Mission of the Month:

Discovery Service Projects

Discovery Service Projects has worked in 11 North and Central American countries as well as Caribbean countries building homes, churches, schools, and clinics.  With a willingness to serve, skilled and unskilled volunteers spend a week or more working with local laborers.

The construction cost of a project ranges from $25,000 to $80,000. Volunteers cover their own expenses and donations from churches and supporters cover the construction costs.  Along with construction work, volunteers may also provide activities for local children, sew, paint, clean, or deliver food and supplies to local residents.

Donate to Mission of the Month

DUMC continues to support students served by the Methodist Home for Children in Philadelphia (our August Mission of the Month). Next time you’re in the store, please consider picking up a backpack or school supplies. You can also click here to go to the Amazon wish list.

There will be a box in the lobby of DUMC through Friday, August 2 to collect new backpacks and new school supplies. You may also leave supplies in the "Feed My Sheep" bin under the portico at DUMC when the church is closed.

Volunteers are needed to sort and pack supplies on Saturday, August 3 at 9:00 am.

To volunteer or for more info, please contact Karen Condit: (215) 919-9927

Summer Hospitality

During the summer months, we will continue to have coffee and tea available each Sunday, as well as cool refreshments. This is a more relaxed time of year and any time that you can donate to this ministry, it is certainly appreciated! This is a very rewarding ministry and not at all difficult. We’re happy to train you! See our SignUpGenius or contact Cindy Betancourt in the church office.

Flower basket waterers needed

Do you have a green thumb? Do you enjoy the outdoors? We invite you to volunteer at DUMC!

We are in need of more volunteers to help water the flower baskets and urns around the church. We use SignUpGenius to organize the schedule as the flowers need to be watered every day. Each volunteer can pick the dates that work best for them between mid-May and mid-September. If you are interested, sign up here or contact Sheri Shifman. Thank you!

Hello DUMC youth families!

I wanted to inform you of a new opportunity we are super excited to be providing to youth interested in being confirmed this coming school year! This opportunity will require some changes to the current confirmation program, but I believe these changes will enhance the program!

This year we want to provide a deeper exploration in Confirmation Class. In years past, Confirmation has only met in the winter/spring semester. However we are looking to move to a two-semester model to provide more time for relationships to form and to be able to expand the content we are able to cover!  This will allow us to do a one semester deep-dive of the Bible and a semester on Methodist theology. This new model will feature two field trips, (1 each semester) and a required service day. We are looking forward to the ways this will shape our confirmands. The day and time, as well as signups for confirmation will be made available soon!

Blessings, Lenae
