September is Suicide Prevention Month
-
Everyone can play a role in preventing suicide! During National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September, help the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) raise awareness by sharing resources that help others recognize the warning signs for suicide and learn how to get help.
-
On September 19, 2023, please join NIMH for a Facebook Live event on youth suicide prevention. Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people in the U.S. During the event, NIMH experts Drs. Lisa M. Horowitz and Stephen O’Connor will lead a discussion on talking to youth about suicide risk, how to identify the warning signs of suicide, risk factors for suicide, and NIMH-supported research on interventions for youth suicide prevention.

A locked firearm can mean the difference between a tragic outcome and a life saved for someone in crisis. Gun locks are available for free at the BCC office. Limit two locks per person. Please reach out to Linda Quiroz, linda@bastropcares.org to request a lock.
Nourish Building Capacity
The Nourish coalition was officially established in May and stands on the shoulders of the past work of many in Bastrop County. Currently, Nourish is working on building its member capacity, identifying areas of need and prioritizing community projects. We envision a community-based effort that brings together food cycle stakeholders and members of varying cultures, tastes, and budgets to create a sustainable food system that can nourish us today and for generations to come. If you're interested in this kind of work, let us know here. This survey is designed to get the right folks working in sectors of interest that are most meaningful to them. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Stony Point Homes Getting Sewer
Bastrop County Cares was asked by Commissioner Mark Meuth to work in the Stony Point community to get 26 signatures from residents of Stony Mont to connect homes to sewage infrastructure.
Through previous community engagement work, including construction of a playground in Stony Point, our organization was able to leverage relationships with community leaders to collect those signatures at Duron’s Grocery Store in the Stony Point community.
After successfully collecting the required number of signatures, we applied for grant funding to complete sewer connections for those residents. Relationships were established to assist in future community partnership efforts.
