Connecting People

It never ceases to amaze me at how many incredible things happen in Bastrop County every day. You'll find this newsletter full of upcoming events and stories of how communities come together to support each other.

As Bastrop County Cares has grown over the past few years, we've strengthened our policies and procedures. One step we took to that end was to perform a financial audit. As an organization that has grown as quickly as BCC, we anticipated that the auditors would find areas for improvement. I'm thrilled to share that we received a clean audit. Thank you to our board and staff for the fiscal responsibility they've shown that allowed us to receive a clean audit!

I hope you enjoy this newsletter edition and find at least one way to get connected with one of our many coalitions!

In work together,

Debbie Bresette

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Uninsured women are six times more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer than insured women. In Central Texas, Black women have twice the mortality rate of white women with similar diagnoses, according to the United Way. Early detection can save lives, and we believe every woman deserves to have access to affordable screenings. Bastrop County’s Breast Health Initiative is on a mission to make sure all women in Bastrop County get screened. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bastrop County Breast Health Initiative and its partner organizations have events across the county planned.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

  • Everyone can play a role in preventing suicide! During National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September, help the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) raise awareness by sharing resources that help others recognize the warning signs for suicide and learn how to get help.
  • On September 19, 2023, please join NIMH for a Facebook Live event on youth suicide prevention. Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people in the U.S. During the event, NIMH experts Drs. Lisa M. Horowitz and Stephen O’Connor will lead a discussion on talking to youth about suicide risk, how to identify the warning signs of suicide, risk factors for suicide, and NIMH-supported research on interventions for youth suicide prevention.
  • Bluebonnet Trails Community Services is the principal supplier of NARCAN to Williamson County's first responders, school districts and parents of at-risk children. https://bbtrails.org/getnarcan/

Nourish Building Capacity

The Nourish coalition was officially established in May and stands on the shoulders of the past work of many in Bastrop County. Currently, Nourish is working on building its member capacity, identifying areas of need and prioritizing community projects. We envision a community-based effort that brings together food cycle stakeholders and members of varying cultures, tastes, and budgets to create a sustainable food system that can nourish us today and for generations to come. If you're interested in this kind of work, let us know here. This survey is designed to get the right folks working in sectors of interest that are most meaningful to them. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Stony Point Homes Getting Sewer

Bastrop County Cares was asked by Commissioner Mark Meuth to work in the Stony Point community to get 26 signatures from residents of Stony Mont to connect homes to sewage infrastructure.

Through previous community engagement work, including construction of a playground in Stony Point, our organization was able to leverage relationships with community leaders to collect those signatures at Duron’s Grocery Store in the Stony Point community.

After successfully collecting the required number of signatures, we applied for grant funding to complete sewer connections for those residents. Relationships were established to assist in future community partnership efforts.
