Habitat Newsletter
November 2020
From our Executive Director
Thankful for a Place called Home
The importance of home may never have been more evident than in 2020. This is an unprecedented time where everyone has been forced to deeply consider home’s fundamental importance —having safe, decent and affordable shelter. We all have a renewed appreciation for our place of retreat, the place we weather the storm. Because of your past generosity, nearly 300 local families have a safe and affordable place to call home. Many of our Habitat homeowners serve on the front lines in healthcare, the hospitality industry, local grocery stores and our schools. We are grateful for your continued support. Your gift made it possible to help our homeowners get through this time and enabled our affiliate to continue building for those who have worked so hard for their opportunity to build equity for their families. We are thankful that you have supported our mission through the hardest of times and enabled us to continue to build quality, affordable homes.

In the wake of the pandemic, Habitat quickly adapted to the CDC guidelines and created a safe place for volunteers to continue to serve their community. Despite the roadblocks, we are proud to say that with your determination, we built nine new homes this year, and we are on track for ten more next year!
We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Habitat’s mission is to give hardworking families a chance to improve their living conditions, economic stability and their children’s future. Children raised in their own homes tend to have better reading and math scores, achieve higher education levels and experience greater upward mobility than their peers who grew up in rented homes. Greater opportunity creates a more robust economy, improves child development and reduces healthcare spending and exposure to health threats.
We appreciate your support and hope you will consider us during the Season of Giving. Habitat cannot exist without your support, and we want you to know that donations made directly to your local Habitat have built homes here in Moore, Richmond and Hoke Counties.
Dondi Jones Leads ReStore
Dondi Jones has been named Sr. ReStore Manager and will be leading our ReStore team as we expand into Hoke and possibly other areas. Dondi started with Habitat 14 years ago, driving the truck. and His Habitat heart, calm demeanor and initiative make him the perfect fit to lead the ReStore to a new level of excellence. He will be hosting a zoom meeting with interested volunteers soon - please make sure to let him know if you want to participate. We will also record meetings so you can access the information on your own time.

Building Abroad – 236 Homes Built
With every home we build in the Sandhills, we help serve a family through Habitat for Humanity International’s Tithe Program in Zambia and Haiti. Every time you donate to Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills, you’re not only helping to build affordable homes locally but also in low-income communities around the world. All tithe program funding goes directly to support programs in these countries. Our international operation ensures the funds are used efficiently and effectively to better the lives of people living in poor communities without spending money on administration charges.
Please sign in every time you volunteer with Habitat. In addition to other uses, this is the tool we use to perform contact tracing in the event that we have a positive Covid test. If staff or volunteer tests positive, we will utilize Volunteer Hub to determine who is actively volunteering and who may have been in contact with the individual. Please help us keep you, and our entire team, safe and healthy by signing in and out even if you are just stopping by briefly. Thank you!
Homeowners Yard of the Year
We are grateful to our many partners in the faith community who invest in our mission. They not only help to fund and build our homes, especially during our bi-annual Apostles Build (coming in 2021) but also support and celebrate our homeowners throughout their journey. The Village Chapel Women’s Group has chosen a special way to honor our homeowners by providing a generous gift to our Yard of the Year’s winner. A brand new Instant Pot will be awarded to the Zamora family this December to recognize their Habitat Home.
Eliseo and Adrianna bought their beautiful new home in Midway Gardens in April 2015. At that time, their children were Sophia, an older daughter, and younger children Adriana, Maria, Leonela, and Eliseo, who ranged from age 4 – 12. Their home was sponsored by the Friends of Pinewild in a Neighbors Helping Neighbors campaign.

We are grateful to the women of The Village Chapel, our faith partners, and our homeowners – thank you for your partnership!
Honoring Our Habitat Veterans
The gratitude that we have for our active military and veterans goes beyond words. Our country’s military service members have stepped forward to protect every one of us in times of need. At Habitat, we are proud to celebrate veterans’ continued service who are building homes, working in the ReStore and improving our communities. As part of our program, we will be launching our “Veteran’s Build” in 2021 and offering home repair services to veterans in Richmond, Hoke and Moore County.
Hoke County ReStore
Plans for opening a new ReStore in Hoke County are moving along quickly. Habitat has been offering pick-up service in Hoke for almost a year, but soon you will be able to shop for home décor, furniture and the occasional treasures that you can only find at a ReStore. Thank you to our volunteers who are working diligently on the new ReStore.
Homeowner Recruitment Session
First, we would like to take a moment to thank Trinity AME Zion Church for allowing us the opportunity to hold our two night Habitat Homeowner Recruitment at their community center. This year with COVID and capacity restrictions, we had to become creative. On October 20th, we held two sessions with which we had a full presentation on “Becoming a Habitat Homeowner and What that Means”. Of 77 who registered, 40 attended the first night, and 29 came back the following Thursday with complete application packets. Over the next few weeks, Laurie and the Selection Committee members will begin qualifying those applicants.
