Congregational E-News ~ July 1, 2024

For many years I have been fascinated by the Universe Story as told by Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme in their book by that name. My fascination has developed into passion for Earth, spirituality, justice, and wholistic living. Some of this passion is expressed in the following written in the early 90’s and expanded recently.

At Home

How wonderful to feel at home

As I touch my deepest desires, see them threaded through my life day after day, I feel at home

It is awesome and comforting, profound and so very mundane.

I am most myself when I feel at home. I am most at home when I feel myself.

Oh, gentle loving Mother-God, thank you for always drawing me home!

But then you promise to make a home in me if I love you and keep your word!

Not only will I be at home, but I will BE your home!

I have come to be at home in you - in your heart – that is mystery enough!

Will you make me into a home – for you, no less?!

Yes, dear heart, I will, I have! You are my home, my dwelling place!

Come, let us be at home together!

Over the years, Holy One, deep within my being you have gradually expanded my inner universe.

Our being at home together now has depths of meaning once never imagined.

We are at home on Mother Earth, in the Universe, or some would say, even amidst multi-verses.

Together is a lively diverse crowd, a kin-dom of two-leggeds, four-leggeds, many-leggeds, finned and furred and slithering ones, growing, granite, grainy ones and more… on and on and on.

Yet we are all called to be at home together in mutually-enhancing ways

Contemplatives in action co-creating with you together in mercy, justice, kinship, a cosmic dance of Love.

Franciscan Sisters Celebrate Jubilee

The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia 2024 Jubilee Celebration was held the weekend of June 7-9. Jubilarians celebrating 25, 50, and 70 years of religious profession gathered at Our Lady of Angels Convent in Aston for a weekend of recalling memories and celebrating both the years past and the years to come. On Saturday afternoon at Assisi House, our retirement residence in Aston, there was a special Mass for the deceased members of the jubilarian sets and a luncheon supplied by congregational leadership. On Sunday morning, June 9, both jubilarians and guests gathered in Our Lady of Angels Chapel for a special jubilee liturgy. Father Cyprian Rosen, OFM Cap., presided over the liturgy during which the jubilarians renewed their vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience—vows which they had professed 70, 50, or 25 years ago and which they continue to live out daily. Following the liturgy both jubilarians and their guests gathered for a luncheon at Our Lady of Angels Convent.

Collectively the 15 jubilarians represent 965 years of service in multiple ministries, including: education, health care, childcare, social services, prayer ministry, parish ministry, diocesan ministry, congregational ministry, and eldercare. Their ministries have taken them to 23 states and 25 dioceses, including Africa and Puerto Rico. We wish all our jubilarians very joyful congratulations!

#Wear Orange: National Gun Violence Awareness Day

On June 7, 2024, citizens across the United States put on their orange shirts and gathered together to bring awareness to the issue of gun violence in our nation. National Gun Violence Awareness Day was started by the family and friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teenager who was shot and killed at the age of 15. It was first celebrated on June 2, 2015—what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday—when family and friends wore orange in honor of her favorite color and marched to bring awareness to the epidemic of gun violence plaguing this country. Originally observed on her birthday, National Gun Violence Awareness Day is now celebrated on the first Friday of June and the weekend is known as Wear Orange Weekend.

This Sisters of St. Francis and their companions and coworkers participated in this important weekend bringing awareness to gun violence. On Friday afternoon, approximately 40 people gathered in front of Our Lady of Angels Convent in Aston to pray for an end to gun violence. This event was livestreamed on the Sisters of St. Francis’ Facebook page. After the prayer, participants gathered on the sidewalks in front of the convent holding banners and posters calling for an end to gun violence. Many drivers passing by honked in support. Then at 1 P.M. the chapel bells tolled in honor of the many victims of gun violence. This was part of the “Toll the Bell” action that was presented by Penn Live Arts and asked organizations in and around Philadelphia to ring bells as a call to action to both honor those who have lost their lives to gun violence and encourage everyone to help bring about change.

On Saturday, June 8, the action continued when Chester Community Coalition (CCC) held their third annual 2024 Wear Orange Peace Walk and Block Party. The event began with a peace walk in the morning. Marchers gathered at 9th and Kerlin Streets in Chester, Pennsylvania, and walked to Martin Luther King park. Most of the participants walked, but some also drove in cars or rode on the Assisi House bus. The block party at the park was attended by over 100 people, including about 25 sisters and companions, and was a family-friendly event with food and entertainment. The program included speeches by members of CCC and several politicians—U.S. Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, PA State Representative Carol Kazeem, and Mayor of Chester Stefan Roots among others. There was also a butterfly release to remember those lost to gun violence.

Participating in Wear Orange Weekend is one way that the Sisters of St. Francis and their companions live out their corporate stand on behalf of gun safety reform.
