Social Action

WHEN WE HELP OTHERS, WE ARE ALL MADE BETTER

Please join us on OCTOBER 9TH at 7:00 PM in the Herbert & Shirley Semler Board Room for an organizational meeting of CBI's Social Action Committee

Now is the time to make a difference - to guide the social action activities of our members - to be the transformational change we each can be.

Your participation in our High Holidays Food Drive was amazing and thanks to you, we delivered over a ton of food to Lift Urban Portland's food pantry. Special thanks goes out to our religious school students and parents who delivered the food.

Our primary focus this year will be on the alleviation of hunger and its devastating impacts, but as we are a large community, working together, we can also address other issues.

This is an organizational meeting and will not necessarily be the regular meeting time for our Social Action Committee. If you cannot attend this meeting but would like to participate in Social Action, please let Dara know at dara@bethisrael-pdx.org and you will be added to our distribution group.

ONE BY ONE, COMING TOGETHER,

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Can you help?

Many of the children and teens who live in Northwest Towers, the low-income housing facility next door to Congregation Beth Israel, need shoes and others need coats.

Once again, we are asking for your help in making life better for the children next door. We have 25 children still awaiting your assistance. Because kids are so conscious of their peer group and their own preferences, we've provided specific details for each child from information their parents gave us.

These coats and shoes will not only provide a necessity, but will give the kids something to really enjoy. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

Our online signup sheet: http://www.mysignup.com/shoescoats

Please choose a name from the list, purchase the item indicated, and drop off your gift at the CBI office in the Schnitzer Family Center building no later than Monday, October 15. Please be sure to include the name and apartment number of the child receiving your gift.

If you prefer to make a cash donation, our volunteers will do the shopping for you. Drop off a check at the CBI office, noting that it is for the Social Action Shoes and Coats Fund, or donate online on the Beth Israel website. Choose General Social Action and in the Comments section note that the donation is for shoes and coats. Your contributions will make a difference in these children's lives. Thank you for your generosity.

THE DEBT or HA-HOV
Saturday, October 13, 7:00 pm
Miller Room
(in Hebrew with English subtitles, 2007).
This is the original version, made in Israel. It is a chilling, nervous, superbly acted adventure to watch. Set in 1965, it follows 3 young Mossad agents charged with capturing the Nazi "Surgeon of Birkenau" and bringing him to trial in Israel. They track him in his new life and successfully capture him--only to get stranded with no way to smuggle him back to Israel. He gets away and the agents cover up the affair. After decades, the incident comes back to haunt them and they realize the original mission must be completed. The ensuing action and the ending will surprise and shock you. This film is for adults.

Culminating our year of study, Rabbi and Cantor Cahana will be leading this inspiring, memorable, and adventure packed transformational journey to Israel.

New for Our CBI Community:
A Meditation Group
"May the words of my mouth and the Meditations of my heart..."

Group meditation is a tradition in Judaism and other religions that offers many benefits to regular practitioners including improvements in spirituality, health, and reduced stress. Whether you are new to meditation, a seasoned practitioner, or simply curious, all members of the Beth Israel community are invited to join Cantor Ida Rae Cahana and fellow congregants to experience and learn more about Jewish Meditation.
