Thank you from Pastor Rick
Dear Alice:
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus... the Christ!
What a blessing the people of Grace Lutheran By-the-Sea have become for the Massai Mission. Your recent gift of $1890 for this effort will provide funding for another evangelist to be trained. This is an enormous gift!
Training for each evangelist takes three years of study at Oldonyo Sambu, a small residential training center located in a rural setting on the A104, a paved road from Arusha to Namanga at the Kenyan border. The cost is $600 per year. Once selected, a candidate must be recommended by his local pastor, take a qualifying exam and have a positive interview with church leaders.
Once approved, he begins training at the facility in two-month courses. After each course he returns home for two months, providing him time to be with and provide for his family. Then the cycle repeats itself over a three-year period. Upon satisfactory completion of the course work, he is certified as an Evangelist and assigned a bush congregation, usually near his home.
The evangelists pretty much run the local church. A pastor may oversee as many as 30 small bush congregations, so he depends on the evangelists to do the grunt work in the local setting. When the pastor visits a bush church, which may only be once or twice a year, there will always be communion, weddings, baptisms and confirmations. It's a big deal when the pastor shows us. Training to be a pastor requires an additional four years of study at Mwika Theological School at a cost of $1 600 per year.
Since initiating this educational funding for faithful Maasai men, thirty men have been trained to be evangelists and nine have completed studies to become pastors. This is a huge boost to the Maasai community of faith. God is using these dedicated men to g row His Kingdom in traditional Maasailand where heretofore little effort had been made to spread the Gospel.
I was thrilled to receive the check for $1890 from Grace By-the-Sea. What a blessing this is for this simple effort to encourage the spread of God's Word among the Maasai of norther Tanzania. I am so humbled to have been directed by God to initiate this work in 2000 and to have been granted His sufficient grace to sustain it through these years. Your wonderful and very generous gift from Grace by the Sea makes it possible to continue.
Please convey my sincere thanks and appreciation to the members for this awesome gift!
In service to our Lord, Jesus ...
